How long ahead should I request a visitor's visa extention?

My husband and I are in the process of applying for his permanent residency in Canada but his visitor's visa will expire before the process is complete. We were told that we could just ask for an extension but I don't know how long ahead of time we should do it to make sure he doesn't have to leave the country. Also, how would I do this? Do we have to contact immigration canada a request a form or is there somewhere I can go to apply in person?

in the us, as soon as uscis gets your application and sends you a receipt you are automatically allowed to stay in the country until the final decision is made. i would call an immigration officer and asked if it is the same case in canada.
Otherwise, yeah, i would apply for an extension as soon as possible. i have a feeling that immigrations in canada is probably just as slow as in the US. here, you can download the forms off the internet.

in the middle it says something about forms and guides. try to find a number and call. i'm sure they have that kind of service. here in the us it takes half a day to get someone but the information they can give you is usually helpful.
