I am a canadian citizen and need to stay and take care of my Grandmother(who raised me) who lives in the USA. I thought canadians could stay in the usa up to 6 months, less a day and then they would have to come back to canada to touch canadian soil and then they can go back to usa again and so, but not sure about this at this point and need to know. I will call the immigration office but have been on hold for a very long time. Please help if you can. Thanks very much!

Six Months. after that you start to lose medical benefits even if they are paid. and there are some tax issue's. and of course immigration issues with the US. |

For those entering the USA as tourists there are 3 categories:
1) Tourist visa
2) Visa Waiver Program
3) Canadians - Canadians are not under a visa waiver program.
The general rule for Canadian visitors is that they can stay for 6 months within a calendar year. However that time period can be extended if they are certain that your stay is only temporary.
There is no visa involved for Canadians as long as they are not going to the USA to work or study. |

well i guess as long as your passport isnt expired you should be good, since you guys dont get issued i-94's there really isnt a way to tell how long you've been in the US. we encounter alot of canadians at our check point and we just let them through (mostly winter texans)... |

Nope. If you are married to an american you can stay that long but only if you are a child or spouse. Contact US immig 1-800-375-5283 the n o may only work in the US. contact the us embassy in canada

It has to do with the taxes more so, than anything else. You will have tax trouble if you stay longer then 6 months at once. |

I believe you can get some kind of specific visa for this familiar situation. They can let you stay. But you could also think about bringing the old lady to Canada, don't you? |
