To become a naturalized citizen of the U.S., you must meet the following general requirements:

Be age 18 or older; and
Be a permanent resident (usually 5 years); and
Be a person of good moral character; and
Have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government; and
Have a period of continuous and physical presence in the U.S.; and
Be able to read, write and speak basic English. There are exceptions to this rule for someone who:
- Is 55 years old and has been a permanent resident for at least 15 years; or
- Is 50 years old and has been a permanent resident for at least 20 years; or
- Has a physical or mental impairment that makes them unable to fulfill these requirements.

First are you a green card holder? If yes, then it takes 5 years of being a green card holder to qualify for US citizenship. Less for those married to US citizens which is 3 years.

If you do not have legal residency and if you did not file with the USCIS to adjust your status, then you can stay here for a very long time and still not qualify for US citizenship.

You must take a test to be a citizen.

On marriage based Green Card you can wait 3 years but you can apply 90 days prior to the date that is shown on your GC.

The other one is 5 years and also 90 days prior to what it says on your GC.

You also need to make sure you were never more than 6 month out of country unless you had to go because of school or such and you need to provide proof that you did and also have to make sure you always had a re-entry permit.
