You cannot be out of the country for more than 6 months a year. I would not be playing games with the government though on this rule as you cannot possibly win.

Now, this is a tricky question. You have to understand that when you get your green card you have an obligation to stay in the US. I think you are missing the point. Please understand that you applied for a green card with the intention of staying in the US. You are given a green card by USCIS because you expressed intent to stay in the country. However, this does not mean that you are not allowed to travel out of the country but there are restrictions as to how long you can stay, under your new status, out of the country.

You have to remember that when you eventually apply for citizenship, you will be asked how many times you were out of the country and how long you were gone for. Your answer will reveal how interested you are to naturalize or eventually make this country your permanent home.

Based on the law, however, you are allowed to be out of the country for a period up to more than a year as long as you apply for a reentry permit with the USCIS. If you intend to stay for not more than a year then, you will not be needing a reentry permit. Based on the facts that I have given, you will have to figure out how long you want to stay in and out for. My very best to you.

green cards are issued to allow people to live primarily in the US, which means more time in the US than out. you can lose your green card if you remain outside of the US for over a year. However, you can also lose your green card by using it like a tourist visa for short trips to the US while living most of the time back in your home country. the problem is, that's a judgement call on the part of CBP at the airport every time you enter, so you can never really know when or even if they'll do it. but if you're constantly spending most of your time outside the US, at some point it is very likely to happen.
