How long does it take to receive a UK student visa?

I'm an American student and I am hopefully attending the University of St Andrews in Scotland in the fall, but I'm still waiting on other acceptance letters from other colleges. So, I'm wondering how long, generally, does it take for a student visa to come through from the UK? Will I have time to wait for all the other scholarships and schools to send me their answers, or do I need to begin the process right away?
