When you submit your application, you get scheduled for the entrance test. From when you apply to when your test is is usually 1 month. If you pass the test, you have to fill out a bunch of forms and start the pre-employment. This includes a medical exam, fitness test, oral board interview by a panel of agents, random drug test, and the background investigation. The background investigation usually takes the longest amount of time. From when you pass your entrance test to when you have all your pre-employment completed is usually 6-9 months. You then get called up and offered duty station and a slot in the training academy.
All initial assignments are along the SW border, so chances are you'd have to move from Phoenix to be closer to your duty station.
A polygraph (lie detector test) is an option that is open, but is not always used. They will however do a through background investigation that includes talking to neighbors and people who knew you at every place you've lived. If you have anything that might be an issue in your background, be sure to disclose it up front. They much more like to hear about it from you first, than have to dig around and find out from someone else.
