How long out of canada before i lose citizenship?

my lover lives in the us and i want to go there and stay for a while but i don't want to lose my canada citizenship

Once you have Canadian citizenship, you never lose it unless you renounce it yourself or if they discover that you lied to immigration to get it. You do not have to stay in Canada or come to Canada every x years.

You may be confusing citizenship with permanent residency. If you are a permanent resident of Canada, you need to live in Canada at least 2 years out of every 5 years.

If you were born in Canada then you will never lose it. However if you attained it through the immigration process, i.e. citizenship test, then you need be be in Canada at least at one point in 10 years (might be 15) however I don't know how well it is enforced. If you are going the states it wouldn't be very difficult to make a visit every 10 years anyhow, especially if you're someone who wants to keep their Canadian citizenship.
