How long should I remain/stay in the U.S. once I have my Green Card in order to be called a legal U.S. Citizen?

FYI, it was acquired through family sponsorship (IR2) since my dad is an American Citizen.
Also, what steps must I take if I decide not to be a U.S. citizen but rather maintain my green card status (How often should I enter and exit the U.S.)?

Once you have your green card you CAN stay as long as you want, but if you go out of the US it can only be for 6 months, if you stay out of the US for more than 6 months you could risk your status as resident. You can maintain your green card (permanent residence status) as long as you want.
You can process your citizenship after 5 years of being a permanent resident, it is your option to naturalize (turn into a US citizen).
Note: if by any chance you want to become a US citizen and you have been involved in felonies, the USCIS will NOT grant you the citizenship and they can be able to deport you back to your country of origin. This happened to my cousin who was a resident since he was 4 years old and he committed a felony that was cleared by the judge, but when he went to the USCIS to naturalize into a US citizen, the USCIS denied it to him and put him into prison for a month and now he is waiting for his trial and eventually deportation. So be careful when deciding to be or not to be a US citizen. In some cases, depending on your original nationality you can retain a double nationality.
