I don't care if people speak a thousand languages as long as they know English. We HAVE to have a common language in order to co-exist.
I don't think there should be bi-lingual signs in public or federal buildings like courthouses or in national parks. I don't think voting ballots should be bi-lingual. They should be in English. If you can't vote in English, then you shouldn't be voting.
Languages should not be banned, for goodness sake. Everyone living in the USA should know English even if they speak 5 other languages. |

Yes please. English only. They need to learn the language of the business world. It is not just here in the U.S. that it is the language to conduct business in. Over thirty countries around the world only conduct business in ENGLISH. It is the law there.

Why would you think its racist? If you go to Iceland, you need to speak Icelandic. If you go to Quebec, French; Italy, Italian. Learn the language of the country you are living. |

You can speak as many languages as you want, but one of them has to be English.
And it is not RACIST to demand this. Are we being racist against the Germans, the French, the Russians by demanding this? Charges of racism over these topics show just how confused this topic has become because of the bleeding hearts that want the world to join hands in unity. Yeah, unity sounds great, but not all cultures are equal. Races are equal, cultures are not. Some want to cut off your head, some accept massive corruption in government, etc. |

Languages enrich a society. Do you think in Spain people speak only Spanish? There are at least 4 other major languages there. The same happens in Germany, The Netherlands, South Africa, China, Mexico, Guatemala (we have over 22), Switzerland, the UK. You name it, almost every country on Earth you can think of, aknowledges that a liguistic diversity exists and can't be denied in their territory, where did you ancestors come from? would you have denied them of their heritage?
I live in a town in Guatemala where a good portion of the population is from the US, do you think most of them are capable of learning Spanish? Think again! But we have taken them into our community and respect their culture. |

Well, if you don't want to lean English that's okay with me... but I think everything (billboard, ,pamphlets etc) should be written in English... can't read it? Get a dictionary and learn English! It's That simple. |

Because the US is made up of so many different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, I think it would be impossible to force everyone to only speak English. I enjoy trying to speak Spanish, I wish I knew it better, and my father-in-law "speaks" on his hands as his first "language" with English being his second (he is fluent in both). To force people to speak English only would be imposing another person's belief system (many American's) on another human being. A person should have the right to speak any language that feels comfortable, it allows them to remember who they are and where they (or their family) came from, but if the time comes when they need to communicate, fill out paperwork, or try to get a job in the US they should be expected to speak, read and understand the English language. |

Speaking different languages is what makes us all unique. However, you should speak the language of the country you choose to live in. Chances are you moved there for a better life, so you should respect that country by speaking it's language while holding onto your native language and traditions. |

I speak 2 languages, Spanish and English. I choose to speak more Spanish than English because it is my right to do so in this country. Now I of course wouldn't speak spanish to someone whom I know does not speak it. And I'm sure most do not either. However you must take into consideration the time it takes to actually learn to speak English. It is something that cannot be done overnight. Give them a chance and a break. I don't think you could learn a second language in a short time. We only speak spanish to those that know how. And I am sure if you have encountered someone whose 1st language is Spanish they do there best to speak to you with as much English as they have acquired by living in the US. So please don't be so quick to judge. |

yea If ya live in America you should know how to speak English its hard to get a good job with out being able to speak Spanish or something I live in Fall River Ma, and so many people here are Portuguese and half of them cant speak English I go to MC Donald's and the lady behind cant speak English so they bring out someone who does which is nice but at the same time If your gonna live in America at least make an attempt to speak English If I moved to Italy or France I would try to learn their language even if I just went there on vacation Id try to learn some I'm not saying forget your heritage or anything like that just learn the language of the country you live in |
