How many people know that America does not have an official language?

American doesn't have an official language. Therfore all of you people saying hispanics have to learn english, your wrong, because English; although most popular is not the offical language of the USA.

Can people stop calling me " missy" and saying "I" need 2 learn English I am African American and unlike most of yall ancestors who willingly came here mine were forced so please skip the lecture about the constitution because that didn't do crap for me at first ok. My people where forced to learn english we didn't have a choice and I feel bad for Mexicans who should have one, because it's a simple language to learn, but as for the other languages good luck, because they're difficult. In Africa one country has over 12 indignious languages but they most likley have one common language that ties all of them together and that is what english is but not everyone can learn one of the hardest languages in the world. So excuse me for telling it how it is.

Sure, so let's have them not learn English. Now they can't get educated because classes are in English. They cannot get a good job because American businesses operate in English. They cannot even go to the grocery store and guarantee that they will be understood. Hispanics should not be forced to learn English but they should be encouraged to take that option when presented.

Our Constitution was written in English. The Declaration of Independence was written in English. Our National Anthem was written in English. It's obvious that the language for the U.S. is English.

Ummmm missy...where have you been. You had better learn the English language. The USA may not have an official language however, if you want to succeed here, go to school here, go to college or work at any fortune 500 company it would be smart to do so. If you want to work in the fields fine then.
I think the whole issue with americans and them wanting immigrants to learn English is because if you dont you have NO CHANCE in assimilating into the mainstream culture. If you know both more power to you; yet providing these materials in schools to parents as a way to help them while they learn English is fine but if they refuse to learn it at all, it is sending a message that we dont want to be "AMERICAN" we want to be "MEXICAN" or "CHINESE" that is what the whole thing is about. People that dont know how to speak English will have a much harder time going after the AMERICAN DREAM. If you dont want to assimilate here you have no right being here, period. Remember first step is learning the language and missy it is our language whether you like it or not.

No we are not wrong. Since the main language is English and it is the language that is spreading everywhere, they should learn it not only to use it here but almost everywhere if not now then in the near future. It may not be a official language but it is our selected language and has been for over 200 years so there is no need to declare it official. Consider this, would you go to live in another country and not learn the language, even enough of it to get you through the daily decision.?

Well... it may not be "official"... but the language used everywhere (including within the government) may as well be... there's a reason there's no spanish translation written on the back of the constitution

But won't it be a lot simpler if people coming to America learned English - instead of expecting everything to be written in their home country's language?

America is a big place thats why. From french and english in Canada to spanish/portuguese in South America. So many languages, its hard to pick just one.

Was the Constitution wrote in Spanish ??? I dont think so... English is spoken by 82 % of the pop. so wouldnt it be easier to teach the 10.7 % to speak english ? I know that it would be better to not have to deal with " for Spanish press 2 "
