Yes... why?
Well... why should Spanish or French or German be the national language?
.....Uh.. because 90% of the country speaks English...
It would be stupid to make Spanish a national language... Only 15% know Spanish fluently...
French would be around 5%
And German below 5%...
Think about it....

English should be the official language since it is the language spoken by the majority. Period. |

"Although the United States currently has no official language, it is largely monolingual with English being the de facto national language. English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language and nearly everyone in the United States uses it as a daily language. "
This is enougth proof that English should be declared the official language of U.S.A. |

English should be the National Language.
After all...if it was good enough to be the language of the Constitution, it's good enough for me! |

i think english should be the USA's official language because the majority of people speak it. that has been our language for a long time. |

I'm with Jillz on this one - if it's on the constitution, it's good enough for me. |

Yes English should be the national language. Its AMERICA for Gods sake. I know we are a nation of immigrants but they all learned to speak English. Its all the illegal Mexicans that want to change this. Here is what I have to say to them........speak English or leave we dont want you here. |

Yes, because there should be one language in this country that everyone speaks so we can communicate with each other. Most countries have an official language that everyone speaks. We can have one too. It not racist like some say. You can still learn other languages, you just must know English so all US citizens can communicate |

English *is* the language of this country. Always has been, always should be. If you immigrate here, legally or illegally, learn our fricking language and quit being lazy. |

Yes! I find it absurd that we have still not declared English as our national language. We are not excluding other people and their languages. Simply every country deserves to display their own unity and pride. We speak English here, damn it! |

English should be the USA primary and only official language!
If I wanted to live in Mexico, or France, or Afghanistan, or any other country, I would have no choice but to learn their language to surivive!
I do value learning different cultures and being bilingual, but its not fair to go to someones country and be subborn not to learn their language. I shouldnt have to call a business and hear "for English Press One" in a country where English is the predominant language. I shouldn't have to see billboards soliciting people for jobs in Spanish and asking the candidates to be fluent in English, or see a sign for a house for sale in a neighborhood that is predominately English speaking in Spanish! If I work in customer service, I shouldn't have to go get someone to translate for you just because you don't want to learn English!
Bottom line, if you don't want to learn English, you don't belong in the USA. If you don't want to learn Spanish, you don't belong in any Latin American Country. If you don't want to learn French, you don't need to live in France. I think that is fair enough, don't you? |

English should be the national language for the US.
I live in the south, it looks to me like spanish is the #1 language here. It's ridiculous as an american to live here in my own country and not be able to read the street signs, store signs, manufacturers directions, etc.' |

I didn't realise you lot didn't have an official language. However it seems you have adopted English which seems appropriate as it is the international language of business.
But don't forget that you speak and write in American English which is slightly different from its older brother. |

English needs to be the legal language of this country. In most places they print the ballot in many laguages. Now the debate and the newspapers that we use to decide what candidate to vote for are in English so this person using this foreign language ballot has no idea what they are voting for so I guess they just pick one.
Another way to get my brother in law a contract for millions to print these ballots is what the pols are thinking I guess, who cares if they dont know what they are voting for. I am sure they will vote for me because I put out ads in their language telling them I love them and will continue to try and get them money from the government and hire them at my business. |

I think that English should be the official language of the United States.I am sick of seeing signs in Spanish, when my people came here, there were no signs in our language and I still don't see any. If you want to be here that's fine, learn the language. |

Well, if English is named the USA's official language, will that spur people like you to learn the correct rules of capitalization and punctuation?
[Note: America = all of North and South America. "America's" is the correct possessive; "Americas" is the plural.]
I think it's fine for English to be named the USA's official language, as long as you don't denigrate the many other languages spoken here at the same time. I'm not sure how you would go about doing this. After all, the US is a "melting pot" of many cultures and people - ignoring all those other languages would go against this basic founding principle, no? |

I thought english was the chosen language too. I THINK majority of the americans speak english anyway so... |

I do. This would solve alot of problems. IE now, to get a job in California, they want you bilingual...even for crappy fast food minimum wage jobs. We are raised to believe this is an English speaking country and most people speak English. Then suddenly most people dont and are claiming there's nothing official about it. So of course, that is the solution. Make it official and a requirement. |

YES, it should be the chosen language. I don't care of were not older than some other countries. We need a common language and english should be it. It is what is used in our schools for teaching. It is the ballot when we vote. We should have only one language for common use. The ones that dont speak english should learn. Sometimes, people claim they don't know english and they really do. This is so they can i believe get special treatment. |

I do because, then me and a lot of other people would have to learn other languages!!! I already speak English and I don't want to learn another language!! I think if you are going to live in the U.S.A. ,you should learn English since that's what everyone here was taught.I wouldn't go to Mexico and proclaim everyone learn English because I think they need to speak it so I can understand them!!They come here, they should learn English,I go there, I will learn Spanish!! |

chosen, but not national language. We should have the freedom to communicate in all languages we choose. |

That makes little sense... only 2 countries in the American continent have English as their first language, while the rest speaks Spanish.
How stupid...
Oops... now I noticed you meant the USA and not America. |
