How should immigrants and migrant workers integrate into the UK?

I like this question.

What makes someone British is that they have all the paperwork to say so.

Not everyone who lives here watches The Last Night of The Proms , listens to the Queens Christmas speech, has their radio permanently tuned into Radio 4, or only watch BBC1 on TV. All things considered very British, however not everyone likes them - not a problem.

I am a 45 year old Brit, married and never divorced or lived with anyone before getting married, and have two children. Education and hard work is important. I accept responsibility for my family, and although I am a million miles from perfect, they still love me, and I love them.

So, for all the lazy, unemployable, intolerant louts who say ' Pakis go home' , get a life. Integrate yourselves into society, get hobbies, interests, jobs, education, morals.

Stability is what we need and fewer bigots.

The BNP should not be allowed to exist as a political party because it causes dissension, hatred and animosity. A person may have brown skin but still be born British. There seems to be very little trouble with white Americans or Australians living here.

Could it be said that the BNP is more concerned about the colour of a person's skin than their country of origin ? My father was Irish, came here, worked in a factory and paid his taxes. I went to a state gramar school, demonstrating potential, obtained qulifications by effort, am now employing people, paying stacks of tax of my own, and generally contributing to society.

Anyone with an axe to grind over people with roots from overseas are talking tripe, partly because everyone has an overseas ancestor somewhere down the line.

Speaking the language of the country you decide to immigrate to is a basic. That basic is not happening.

I would suggest with all the free courses in learning English paid by the tax payer is a start.

Stop translation services paid by the tax payer. Individuals have to pay for themselves.

A common language is a base level for a cohesive society.

Attitude, evey time. All immigrants should go look at the Chinese. they come here to work within the country, and to be honest they are hardly noticed. They are happy to fit in. Happy to be a part of it all, as i believe the vast majority of immigrants are.....Islam is the problem. Islamic immigrants are a night mare, they have no intention of fitting in, they are here simply to cause trouble and eventually take the country. Throw out Islam, and immigration problems would end over night. EVERY one knows it in their hearts, but no one has the BALLS to face it, and do something about it.

It probably has not crossed your mind Hal ,but many people do not want to integrate with immigrants.Right or wrong its a fact of life.Why should i open my curtains in the morning and see a mosque,i'd much rather see a church.Why should i drive an extra five miles on my journey to avoid an immigrant no-go area to save myself from attacks.Why should i read/see a "one law for them another law for you" going on around me each and
every day.
As for the immigrants integrating with us this only happens temporarily until their own community is up and running and expanding at a phenomenal rate.Most immigrants would rather not integrate with us.Its just a matter of choice,just because a politician or church/mosque leader or anyone else suggests it would be better for us all to get on it does not mean you have to do as they say.
Also bizarrely its the immigrants who use the "innit language"more than the British 70 miles away from you, where i live.As you constantly point out there is good and bad in both groups but surely the choice to live/not to live within each others communities is one choice we can retain.
My idea of Britishness is how we lived in the fifties and sixty's ,i understand we can never return to that way of life and unless you know better i can only point the finger of blame at enforced multiculturalism.

By buzzing of back to were they came from . We will soon not have the means to feed our own without the freeloaders from abroad. We didn't ask them here we do not want them here and we were not consulted if we wanted them here . So buzz of go and freeload somewhere else.

Learn to speak English (and/or Welsh if you live in Wales). do not expect the taxpayer to fund translation services for you, especially in regards to Benefits.

Respect our laws and customs, (ie do not claim to be "offended" if someone hoists a flag or celebrates St George's day/St David's Day etc etc. Do not throw a customer out of your Polish shop for "being English")

Get a job (preferably the Government would only allow in those who have needed skills anyway) do not come here to sponge off the Government and do not bring with you family members who will do so. If you want to bring your family over then support them yourself like the rest of us have to.

Do not march through London with placards announcing "Death to those who insult Islam"

Do not detonate bombs on the London Underground and kill 52 innocent civillians

Respect other peoples' religions and do not stand on a soapbox in Finsbury Park shrieking about how "Islam is going to take over the UK"

Respect other people's rights NOT to subscribe to your religion/beleifs/culture.

I totally understand that many born and bred British citizens do not follow all of the above and do not have jobs, indulge in crime etc. But lets face it, we have enough scumbags of our own who we need to sort out. Why should we bring in anymore.

If you want to come and livein the UK you should prove that you will be an asset to the country and not a destructive/negative influence. Just being a decent, hard working, law abiding person with some loyalty to and interest in the country where you live should be enough.

And before you say anything - I have nothing to do with the BNP, am not a member, not a voter, never have been, never will be. These are just ideas from a fairly ordinary Welsh housewife with no real political affiliation.

To me "Britishness" is this:-

Hardworking
Honest
Strong Family Life
High Morals
We value freedom and democracy
We hold out our hand in friendship and in times of need
Polite and Respectful to all
Tolerant

These, it would seem, are what many would today call "old fashioned values" and are not really relevant to life today. I completely disagree with this - if everybody were to follow these values life in Britain would be back to where it was, let's say 50 years ago - and there was certainly not the chaos that we see today.

I guess if somebody migrates here I would expect them to be able to speak English, find work, pay taxes, follow our laws and respect them, recognise that we are a christian country and not try to foist their own religion on us in way way, integrate and not live a secular life within communities within communities, understand that we, the British people and our country are not going to change for them - if they come here they must change and adapt. If they are prepared to do this - then fine by me.

You know my Mum was an immigrant from Ireland - she and her familly came over 60 years ago or so because there was no work or means of a decent living in Ireland at that time. She worked hard and completely immersed herself in British life - she always regarded Ireland as her "homeland" but recognised that she lived in Britain. Yep - she did meet the odd bigot here or there. But, I remember her saying that there was not another country in this world like Britain - a country that was tolerant, generous and easy-going - so much so that she felt that there were immigrants who took advantage of this country and it people's generous nature! There you go and that came from an immigrant!

If you are a grossly overpopulating culture who impoverished your own nation that way, why would the Brits want you there to impoverish theirs the same way?

What I have noticed with these immigrants is - the minute they step foot on our soil, they go seek out their own kind! They don't integrate with the native Public. They gather together in what I would call ghettos! They have their own little barriers, make up their own laws, and ignore everything else! What I would like to know, is WHY do they come here in the first place, if not for being persecuted in their own countries!? It can't be our marvelous climate! Brrr! LOL! So what? Personally, I don't care if they don't want to "join the crowd". I would prefer them not to be here at all! It is a pain in the neck trying to converse with these people, nine times out of ten, they refuse to speak our native language, so communication is lost! If they really want to be British, they should follow the old saying, When in Rome, do as the Romans do!!!

As noted, speaking the language. Essential and I do not understand people who do not, and do not understand why we make an effort

As for values, while most of us say we value tolerance, that does not seem to be a feature seen on this site.

'The mechanic' has the right answer. We have a culture we built over hundreds of years. We talk English. We are polite. We don't wear masks. The young kids that DO WEAR HOODS SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE STREETS AND LOCKED UP.We love our land and country. Freeloaders come her for what they can get without putting anything into the 'kitty'. If they want to come they should spend three years in the forces then work and pay taxes for three years then if judged satisfactory allowed to stay for a fortnight.

Attitude, as Crow says, is all important.
And if people come here with an attitude of respect, first and foremost, then I'd say they'll integrate well enough - assuming they're here legally, of course.
It's just simple decency and good manners to behave as is the custom of the host whenever one is a guest in someone else's home. You wouldn't, for example, arrive at somebody's house for a dinner party and promptly start rearranging the furniture; complaining that the decor isn't to your liking; demanding everyone else present observe your own mores with regard to social etiquette; etc. Or, if you did, you couldn't reasonably expect to be made to feel very welcome.
Britain is a pretty easy going place on the whole, but unfortunately this has been taken as a sign of weakness by some - and as an invitation to criticise, ignore, or even attempt to overthrow a way of life and a set of legal principles that have served our people fairly well to date.
It's not difficult to fit in here and be accepted if you really want to. Common sense says you need to learn the language, obey the laws, and work to support yourself and your dependents.
The door is always open for anyone who feels they cannot meet these basic requirements and wishes to leave.

There are hardworking blacks, Asians, etc. that fyi DON'T sponge off society, but hold good jobs as doctors, teachers and lawyers etc.

It's amusing how some chavs (that often have Irish, French, etc grandparents or so on) living in a council paid/funded house find it in their place "right" to tell them to go home, just because they're from another country and have a different colour skin.

I don't deny there are immigrants trying for welfare, but they shouldn't even be entitled to it, anyway. But don't lump them all in together.

A lot of anti-immigrants and BNP are in HIGH DENIAL. It is a subtle form of racism, whether you want to admit it or not.

I think you are right. Don't shoot me down, but in UK, like elsewhere there are real scum buckets, who sponge of the government and yet complain when other people want to work. No wonder the more well-educated immis tend to stick to themselves;)
For me, the basics are:
Speaking local language, respecting the culture and having some sort of loyalty to host country.
