How to authenticate a UK passport?

I have a supposed passport number from someone in the UK who has responded to a house for sale posting on line. I want to verify this individual with the passport number given.

The only people who can confirm is UK Embassy in ur country, or if u r in UK urself then u need to contact passport agency for identity confirmation.

This service is not normally available to individuals so you may not be entertained by UK Embassy or Passport agency.

No agency or embassy will give you that info as it is personal and private. They most do not authenticate passports for this purpose. Sounds like a scam to me *cough*
