i know someone who has been in the U.S illegaly for about 3 years.
His passport has been expired. he now wants to return to his country. wont they stop him from borading a plane without a passport?

It may depend on what country he is from. I know that Mexico allows it's citizens to return without a passport. All they need to show is an official Mexican Id and they are allowed to board any airplane. Check with his country consulate. |

He needs to go to the embassy of his citizen country and speak to them. |

Just talk tell them to talk to the embassy of their nationality. They will give him the forms to fill out to renew his passport (or you may be able to download them from the website).
They don't stop you from leaving if you have a legitimate passport or if you're leaving. |

If he has La matricula consular, he can use that to exit. Actually, there are several ways to leave. Different IDs, and, stuff. I have gone with Mexicans to the airport, and, gotten into a disagreement with them (pre- new restrictions), and, they were allowed to go home with no ID. |

Exiting the country illegally is also probably dangerous, but it does get done.

Tell your friend to comit a bank robbery which would be a felony over here in the USA and make sure he stares at the camera for identification purposes. When he is arrested and it becomes known that he is an illegal alien, not ONLY will he be given a free ticket home.... BUT he will be given free housing with NO rent to pay, all his meals will be free, a free medical checkup upon entering his new home which will be called Federal Prison, a nice hard bed, a free hair cut, new orange clothing and cable tv that he may watch free for probably an hour a day (if they have tv in his country). |

How did they enter the country the same way? Since when is an ILLEGAL concerned with obeying laws, anyway?
He may renew his passport through his country's embassy in Washington. Check for a website and follow instructions. |

If he has an ID he can board a plane. The problem is in convincing the airline that he has the right to enter the country he lands in. If he can't, they can get stuck bringing him back for free and then paying for his ticket back again after USCBP figures out where to send him.
His embassy will usually not renew his passport if he cannot show them a visa. But they will issue him an international travel document good for one trip home. The airlines must accept it.

Nobody checks passports when leaving the country. Only entering the country. Before landing on his country if he needs to stop somewhere else they will require passport nad other documents, but other than this no problem. But check with a trusted pro-bono lawyer. |
