I'm American, can I get a French ID for the year that I live there?

I'm studying abroad for a year and I don't want to have to carry my passport everyday. Can I get a French government issued and recognized ID while I am there?

You have to get a residence card. Why don't you just read the remarks which have been submitted with your visa which clearly state:
ETUDIANT
APT ET CARTE DE SEJOUR A SOLLICITER DES L'ARRIVEE
(temporary work permit and residence permit to be requested on arrival)

Yes. Or No. Why would you believe me when you could check with the folks who are going to give you visa and ask them? I assume you know you will need a visa if you are staying for more than 90 days.

you do not have to carry your passport upon leaving your residence. student who are in France for study for longer than 6 months? must apply for a # carte de sejour # at the Prefecture of the city where they reside.(you must apply for one) law.
