I'm interested in moving to Australia from the US temporarily...do I need a visa or work papers of some sort?

How does that work? I'm looking to go for a year maybe.

In exactly the same way as an Australian needs a visa to work in the US, you will need a visa that allows you to work in Australia.

If you're a high school graduate aged between 18 and 30, you will be able to get a 12 month Work and Holiday visa which will allow you to do any type of work, in any location for up to 6 months with each employer.

If you don't qualify for a W&H visa, it will be very difficult indeed (probably impossible) to come here and work. You would need to have qualifications and experience in an occupation listed as being in need of workers and also an employer willing to go to considerable effort and expense to sponsor you.

You need to get a work visa which is not easy to come by - you need to be qualified in a listed career and/or be sponsored by a job. You cant just arrive and look for work.
