Nope, you keep telling them that you are an American. Not a hyphenated anything.
My wife is Mexican but, she does not refer to herself a Mexican or a Mexican-American. She refers to herself as an American and a proud one at that.
Stand tall and proud for what you believe and don't fall for what the "progressive" liberal Left tries to bait you with. Not everyone is racist like that. |

i think you should be proud to tell them you are American and who cares what they think...say what make you happy...not them |

I think if you are an American citizen, you pay or taxes you contribute to society YOU ARE AMERICAN. Doesn't matter the color of your skin, or from what ethnic background you are from.
God Bless America!!!!
You say your "friends" said that stuff to you?? Sounds like you need new friends honey! |

In my opinion, the only people that consider themselves first class citizens are rich white people. |

It's false. I see successful people, living an excellent life, even with very very dark skin. In the business world, your effort and production determine what kind of "class" citizen you'll be (unless born wealthy...I'm thinking Ted Kennedy, upper class in income only). |

It is your "friends," not you who are making the racist remarks. I think you are right on, not stupid at all. |

say what feels true to your heart. you are the only one qualified to classify yourself. as for the rest of the people, don't worry about what all these people are saying! |

It's not racist.
Notice how everything is racist today?
Let your light shine from your deeds before men, and let their racist opinions be proven wrong.
Start with being a person, not a race. |

If you're in the US and someone asks you where you are from, they are expecting something like Los Angeles, CA, or NY, NY... not I'm an American or Asian-American or Indian-American. Thank god, or I'd be a Welsh-Irish-English-Indian American... and that would be a mouthful... |

I'm married to an Asian. Noone I know considers her second class at all. I think you're overreacting, my friend. True, people of all "colors" can be cruel and disciminatory but for the most part Asians have nothing to fear. |

It's another kind of racism. They are telling you that no matter how successful you are as a minority, you will never be truly American or Canadian which is just as wrong as telling people to give up all their culture, history, languages and faiths to become exactly 100 percent like W.A.S.P.S. If people want to integrate, marry outside their ethnic group or religion, learn the language, live in a mixed neighborhood and work for a regular company, they have that right as much. |

If your born in America you are American. President Roosevelt once said (para phrasing here) if you live in America and you call yourself anything but American i.e. asian american, mexican american you are a traitor.
If you live in this great nation and benefit from all its perks..freedom, economy, etc and you do not consider yourself American get the hell out....thats my opinion. |

You're an AMERICAN, no matter what some people might say.
There's no such thing as "Asian American", "Indian American".. or "African American".
People who are citizens of this country are all Americans. It's as simple as that.
Also, there's no such thing as 'first class' or 'second class' citizens. That's all on the minds of certain people.
I could name a few 'white' people who could be considered 'second class' citizens, based on the filthy way they live. So, it's not a matter of skin color.

I can't speak for everyone... no one can...
but in my opinion, you're not only an American (no prefix) but you're a great American for speaking up and exercising your right to free speech.
What makes America great is the contributions of peoples from every ethnicity and culture...
what I decry right now is the destruction of that culture by those too self-centered to realize that we're not:
African Americans
Asian Americans
Irish Americans
... we're just Americans.
I'm of Italian descent on my mother's side but I'm not an Italian American, I'm an American.
There's a reason my family moved here.
Do you ever hear the term "European Americans"?
When we get past adding these prefix titles to what we really are, maybe we can finally come together as a country.
When we realize that one's skin isn't important but one's heart is critically so... maybe we can put the past behind us.
In my book, you're an American.
Thanks for being a part! |

If you are American citizen, you are "American".
I get the same question from people when I tell them I am American. Then they ask "No, what are you really?" I just laugh. LOL.
Political correctness is the problem. Using hyphenated terms like African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American, etc is divisive! We should just use "American" in all aspects within our society. I guess since we still have policies like affirmative action (which in itself is racist), we will be stuck with using ____-American. So sad. |

Just find a new set of friends who arent hung up on race.
There is no true American, we should realize that by now. Only a definition that varies from person to person. |

The best answer here is the one that says, "I am not a racist but Americans are." And apparently the irony of that statement is lost on her. |

obviously you "friends" that have told you such a thing are close minded.....that is totally false...in this country skin color is not that serious anymore.....how much money you have is what make you a first, second, or third class citizen......ex: Oprah....nobody tells her nothing or what to do....why? b/c she has alot of money....look at those celebrities and successful minorities nobody tells them anything to degrade them because MONEY TALKS...so0 just don't listen to them and get an education |

Dont believe that junk. I am a white American woman and I live in the mid-west. I can tell you that the old white way of thinking is being phased out.
It is generational. The new generations don't seem to have those hard core racist beliefs.
You are just as much an American as I am.
As with anything, you must focus on the positives, not the negatives.
There is still racism in this country, that is unfortunately true... but it is getting much better. We just have to be patient and wait it out.
I am not racist, but do have a problem with illegal immigrants coming here with no regard for our American system of government.
Theodore Roosevelt, 'Federal Textbook on Citizenship Training', published in 1931...
In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one soul [sic] loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people. |

Your friends are pretty ignorant. We are a multifaceted society with people from so many races and religions, everyone can be considered a first-class citizen. Who are they to put someone else down? Do they live in a trailer park in Arkansas? |
