I am Chinese and work as postdoc in NIH with J1 visa. My boss helped me to register a 10-day conference in UK. I am going through the process. But one thing I do still not figure out, would help me with this question? My secretary tell me that I do not need to make an appointment to UK embassy and do not need another visa, she says I am doing the job for government, it is a business of US government and she will give me some paper to certificate my entry. Is she right?

Normally you would need a visa but I think the secretary knows what she is saying; if you have the appropriate document that shows you are traveling on US Government business I assume she's done this before and you will be admitted to the UK. |

She is not right. Visa requirement is based on your citizenship of passport, not the country of your work.

Well, you should have received a mulitple entry 12 month US visa. if it remains valid for the course of your stay, you're ok with US immigration law. As for the UK, I really couldn't say. I've never heard of them allowing 3rd country nationals working for the US to enter without a visa. You could always call them and ask, of course. It's not in NIH's interest to fool you though, so, perhaps they do know what they're talking about. |

You need to ring the British Embassy & find out for yourself.
Even if the secretary turns out to be correct, you'll know for certain once you've spoken to a British Embassy official.
