If you live outside the US regardless of how long, you don't lose US citizenship. Once you give up US citizenship you can not get it back in the future. If the country you are going to does not accept you as a citizen and your birth country doesn't allow dual citizenship (ie lost by naturalizing as an US citizen) by doing this you are effectively stateless and that can cause severe problems
A person wishing to renounce his or her U.S. citizenship must voluntarily and with intent to relinquish U.S. citizenship:
1. appear in person before a U.S. consular or diplomatic officer,
2. in a foreign country (normally at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate); and
3. sign an oath of renunciation
Renunciations that do not meet the conditions described above have no legal effect. Because of the provisions of section 349(a)(5), Americans cannot effectively renounce their citizenship by mail, through an agent, or while in the United States.
G. IRREVOCABILITY OF RENUNCIATION
Finally, those contemplating a renunciation of U.S. citizenship should understand that the act is irrevocable, except as provided in section 351 of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1483), and cannot be canceled or set aside absent successful administrative or judicial appeal. (Section 351(b) of the INA provides that an applicant who renounced his or her U.S. citizenship before the age of eighteen can have that citizenship reinstated if he or she makes that desire known to the Department of State within six months after attaining the age of eighteen. See also Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations, section 50.20).
Renunciation is the most unequivocal way in which a person can manifest an intention to relinquish U.S. citizenship. Please consider the effects of renouncing U.S. citizenship, described above, before taking this serious and irrevocable action. |

This is a very serious matter. If you give up your citizenship to the USA, you will never be able to get it back. |

Where are you from?
As long as you are not from some seriously denied country there is little reason why you can't have both. There are ways to go about it.
You just have to be smart about it. I have 3 citizenships and passports because of family. DO NOT DO ANYTHING THAT SCREWS with your US status.! Again it can be worked out but don't mess that part up.
I think that you need to add some details and post again. |

Unless you want or need to become a citizen of a country that does not allow dual citizenship you do not have to give up our US citizenship. There are other countries that may allow you to become a "national" of that country such as Mexico or India (OCI) (neither country allows dual citizenship) and still remain a US citizen. Explore all your options before you give up your citizenship. If you gave us more information we may be able to come up with a better solution.
Good Luck! |
