immigrant. I supplied copies of both items, they said they need the originals only. (I cannot find my originals) I am an American, My dad was born in Seattle and my mom was born in California and I was born here and have lived in Seattle all my life, worked here, went to school here, pay taxes here, have a bank account established here and have lived at my residence for the last 14 years. Is this legal to get turned down from? The Soc. Sec. told me "never give original out" and don't carry card with you from all the fraud. Do I really have to go through the trouble of a hunt for the originals? Just curious.

CARD USAGE AND DURABILITY
The Social Security card reliably serves only as official verification of the SSN assigned by SSA to the person whose name is on the card. The card is not proof of the bearer's identity or citizenship/noncitizen status, and has no transaction or data storage capability. Employers are advised to use the Social Security card to obtain an employee's correct name and SSN when first recording such information for wage reporting purposes.
Employers, however, do not have the legal authority under the Social Security Act to require an employee to show his or her Social Security card. Neither the Social Security Act nor Social Security regulations require presentation of the Social Security card to conduct business with SSA |

According to the Employment Eligibility Verification you only need to provide the documents supported by the I-9 Form. The prospective employer DOES NOT have the right to tell you which documents you should present, as long as you comply with this rule. Normally, people present one document from list B (usually State ID/Driver License) and one from list C (Social Security Card). Some people avoid the hassle by presenting one document of list A (passport/birth certificate).
The rules goes, present ne document of list A (refer to the form below), OR one document of lists B and C.
Documents should be original, not photocopies. It does not matter of your SS card is old, wrinkle or in pieces, as long as is the original.
You need to present only, not give them out for them to copy. Ask them to be present during the I-9 section C, where the person who sees your documents has to verify that the ones you present are yours indeed.

There is no reason for an employer to require an original birth certificate document. They will make a copy of your original SS card for their records. |

A driver's license and your original SS card should be all that is required for the I-9 form. Yes, you need the originals and this is one time when you have to show them. It's a pain, I know, and a lot of good it is doing keeping illegals from finding jobs but it is the law.
If you have a valid passport that will do all by itself. |

just go tot the SS office and tell them you lost your card, they will issue a new one, it takes a couple weeks
for the birth certificate you can contact the town hall records of the town you were born in, they will be able to issue a "certified copy" which you can pretty much use as an original |

HI, I think we all will need Identification in the coming future.
You can go down to city hall and get a original birth certificate,
which will save you a lot off head aches in the future. Put those papers with all your important ones. Their will be a lot of changes coming up in government .Good Luck |

It is customary to ask to see the originals of any documents that you present.. they won't keep the documents, just look at them and hand them back to you. Instead of your birth certificate, you can use a drivers license or passport if you have those available. |

Everyone... EVERYONE is going to be doing the same thing. You need a certified Birth Certificate, and when you get it from the Hall of Records in the Country you were born in, you make copies and you put it in a very safe place.
But yes... go for the originals and now. This is the way they are getting rid of the illegal aliens and it works. More jobs for you and I! |

you have to go to the birth records office and apply for a birth record. go to the social security office and apply for a s.s card
you'll have to show proof of who you are. |
|

But Wait! There's More!
|
Tell them your lawyer would like to know what they need the information for. (Unless it's for a government job)
Generally, you're not to be asked your age at an interview on the basis of age discrimination. A birth certificate would divulge your age. |
