I bought a small ranch with a runed down house. I asked arownd for a carpenter and was directed to one. The young man was a very nice polite jentelman. We talked about the remodeling job I needed and was quoted a price so I agreed. He took his own help and was doing a very good job. The man went into town and somhow was asked for ID and was arested for being illegal. An officer called me and asked If I knew the imigration laws I replyed no I dont. Asked me if I knew the man i hired was an illegal imigrent I said no. He was taken by border patrol and is being deported. Am I in trouble? Can I be arested, even if I didnt know ? what can the law do to me? What is the fine? I even work for the Gov. and have reported some Illigal imigrents before. I feel that it is the police and border patrol to ask for the persons I D not the unest citizen. Please only experienced answers ( no stupid ans.Thanks) Im woried enough as it is

You hired him so you where his employer. Employers have to check if the people they hire are legal. You will not go to jail but you may get fined. I say may, I dont think they will since it was a isolated case and it was only one person. In the future I suggest you have them fill out the standard paperwork when hiring someone or ask to see some type of credential or permit that allows that person to preform the work you hired them to do.The fines depend on the situation. Your not a company so dont worry to much. Good luck. |
