I work in a cruise ship and my contract ends on June 15. I'd like to stay for a week and visit my sister, am I allowed to do this. I have a B2 visa as well in my passport.

On Feb 18, 1994, the Office of Operations of the now defunct INS sent this message to the field. "A nonimmigrant who has been issued a "D" visa and another category of visa as well, for example a "B" visitor's visa, may apply for admission with the "B" visa only at a land border port, or at an airport or seaport on the deadhead leg of their tour of duty."
In order to be deadheading, the crewman must not have worked as a crewman from the point of embarkatioin outside the U.S. to the port-of-entry. A crewman who is on vacation and is transported to the U.S. as a passenger may apply as a "B" visitor.
The two elements which constitute an alien as a crewman are (1) serving aboard a vessel, and (2) seeking admission because of his occupation in that role.
You would need to sign off the ship and arrive as a passenger in order to apply for admission with the B visa. |

Upon your arrival from a foreign port the thing to do is request that the inspecting officer admit you on the B2 visa rather than the crew visa.
It would also be possible to enter on the crew visa and be given
permission to sign off to depart within 29 days if such arrangements
including confirmation of departure arrangements are requested by the
ship's agent. |

You could use the B2 visa for that. that's the sort of thing it's for. |
