I have overstayed for 9 years in UK. what should I do?

Go to the immigration department and admit what you have done. If you have no bad police record and you have never been sued, then maybe they will review your case and possibly grant you the naturalisation. (Let us face it, if the immigration people were so serious, they would control those allowed into the country on a limited visa, at least 6 months prior to it expiring. Accordingly these people are not doing their job properly! They would not want this to get out!).
On the other hand, they could arrest you, put you away and fine you.
That is the risk, but if you ask me, honesty is the best policy, and that would be to your advantage in the described situation!

why did you stay? and why didnt you sort out a visa or a brittish passport or something?

you've made a rod for your own back, you wouldn't have had this problem if you had just sorted things 9 years ago. There's no problem with you living here but there is a problem with you not telling the government!

Well, whatever you do now is probably going to result in the same thing - returning to your country of origin. If you leave the country, it is unlikely you will be allowed back in (legally, anyway) as you have overstayed once and they will not allow you to do the same thing again.

If you apply to the authorities to stay, they are likely to refuse you leave to remain as you have overstayed by such a long time anyway.

The best you could perhaps hope for is to prove to the authorities that you have settled here, perhaps have a partner, children, pay rent and have a job where you have been paying tax. Then throw yourself on their mercy especially if you come from a country that has a poor human rights record. But really whatever you decide, I think you will end up being returned to your home country.

I agree with most of the above and you should go home.

We are being suffocated in the UK with people from all over the world, we just cannot carry on being a pay packet for the world.

Take all the education, information and money back to your own country and help improve things life there for your friends and family.
You will then leave with best wishes and good luck from us rather than the anger others will face when we throw them out.

best thing to do is speak to a lawyer and get some advice. i don't know how true it is but i have heard that if u r in the UK for 10years or more, illegally, u can receive naturalisation.don't know how true it is but as i said speak to someone that knows more about it. a simple phone call to someone will put Ur mind at ease. take care and good luck.

I guess it depends on what you want.

1) If you want to stay:
then you must legally register with uk immigration. If you are from an EU country I think this will be a straight forward process. If however you are from a non-EU country staying beyond the duration of your visa was a mistake and may complicate your situation. Carefully think about your reasons for staying. If you are not fleeing from a hostile regime and persecution, or have no reason to be here other than to claim benefits and free housing your chances are slim. Having a skill (nurse, doctor, electrician, plumber,...), an ongoing employment or UK relations will increase your chances of getting a permit.

If you do NOT register and UK immigration catches up with you, you WILL be deported which will mean you can NEVER return to the UK!

2) If you want to go home:
Go home. UK immigration won't bother chasing you if you're leaving anyway. Unless you're a criminal of some sort.

You should contact an immigration lawyer who can tell you what your options; ie., if you've married a British citizen you might be able to obtain a ruling in your favour in an immigration court. Grab the yellow pages phone book, look up solicitors and specifically immigration lawyers.

people people how cold are those answers.I do not know if any of you are well travelled, but people leave their countries of origin for the most devastating reasons sometimes, that you would only relate to if you travelled there. and untill you see how some people live.do not be so mean.until you have seen some one you love killed ,tortured,you can not even begin to imagine.what people are trying to get away from.Anyways to answer your question talk to a lawyer find out what your chances are.i doubt you will get constructive legal advice form this site ,as i cannot imagine any lawyers spending anytime on this site.find a lawyer.
