Everybody (even "native" Americans) either is an immigrant or has ancestors that immigrated to the U.S.
The process of entering the U.S. was formerly by Ellis Island. Presently there are immigration offices spread throughout the country. If they entered before the U.S. was a country, there was no "process". The earliest people came by ship or crossed the Bering Strait when there was still a land bridge to Europe and Asia.
The places they settled were various according to the immigrants were and when they came. "Native Americans" were for the most part nomadic and fought amongst themselves.
The reasons they immigrated were many...again according to whom immigrated here and when. |

The quotas for the different countries were based on our current population - so if 33 percent were German then 33 percent of new immigrants would be German. We ended mass immigration in the early 1920's because it was a disaster. It was changed in 1965 to create a new disaster.
