I heard that marrying a foreigner has changed, how long after marrying does it take to be an american citizen?

i heard that it used to take 2 years of marriage for someone to become an american citizen, and that now it takes 10 years????????? is that true? can someone please fill me in on the details?

It's 3 years if you remained married for 3 years to the same US citizen spouse and you maintained your residency for 3 years.Otherwise, it's 5 years.

You will never be an American citizen if you are counting on marriage as the only criteria. You have to do the work. You have to go down and apply for citizenship, then you have to study for the test, and, if you pass, you become a citizen.
There are other requirements too such as legality, if you have a criminal record, etc. I'd ask at the appropriate office so you will know what you have to do to gain citizenship.

The actual answer to the hypothetical question is that it takes 3 years after gaining permanent residence through marriage to apply for naturalization, provided they're still married to the sponsoring spouse and meet all other requirements.

For everyone else, it's 5 years after gaining permanent residence.

If you are even asking this question, I'd really worry that he is only trying to marry you for a passport. Just read these boards - everyday someone is talking about marrying someone from overseas, who then dumps them and leaves them in debt as soon as they get their permanent green card or citizenship. One woman found out her "husband" was already married back in his country.

Don't ever marry someone you just met online. You have no idea who he really is - he could be lying about his age, occupation, marital status, education level, etc. Plus you can't tell anything about chemistry online. Meet each other first. Go over to India and spend time with him - see how he lives, meet his friends and family, etc. And if that works and it's really love, then work on getting him a fiance visa. You can't get a K1 Fiance visa anyway if you have not spent time together.
