Why are they spending money teaching Americans how to speak Spanish instead of teaching foreign children to speak English?

And I too speak more than 1 language.

Hey sympathizers, the last time I checked this was still the United States. Mandating language is only another way to make illegal immigration more accepted. By making us adapt to foreigners only makes it less likely that foreigners, illegal or legal, will NEVER adapt into American culture.

Languages should be ELECTIVE! One day, they will say that we all have to be educated in the religious back rounds of all those who come from other countries, then they will FORCE religious education in public schools.

What will you say then???? When and where do we draw the line between the US and every hole in the wall country that has it's citizens living among ours??

Why are you all so ready to give our country and culture to every single immigrant? When some of my ancestors came here, they couldn't get a job until they LEARNED THE LANGUAGE. They had to adapt, and then they became successful.

Not forcing immigrants from learn English will only insure that we have to pay for every single one of them, and will only keep them down.

If you gave a damn at all about those who want to come here, or for your own children, you would be outraged that they aren't required to adjust to OUR culture.

Do you think that if you moved to France, they would accommodate you? What about Mexico? I think not.
But lets make a deal, you go and live somewhere else and tell me if they change their entire culture to accommodate you. If they do, I'll agree to let American Schools teach our children how to sell their heritage to the highest bidder.

Hey, Gordita de Oro, if you are going to insult someone by saying "YOUR STUPID", you might want to use "YOU'RE", otherwise, you only show YOUR own mental shortcomings.

I also see a lot of people calling tha asker names instead of arguing the issue. But what else can be expected of people who claim to be so tolerant, and yet belittle someone by calling them names. Heres the problem-

she'll need 2 years of a foreign language to get into college...you are stopping her from learning the language early on that she'll most likely choose because spanish is the easiest to learn. I can't control what you do with your kids but I would reconsider if I were you. In the long run, its a benefit. Just because you learn another language doesnt mean we'll be overrun with illegal aliens and immigrants.

I agree with your decision.This is an English speaking country whether anyone likes it or not.To succeed in this country to full potential you must speak English.Personally I feel the school is setting the Spanish speaking children up for failure if they don't make them learn English.

It appears that I am not the only one here who is beating their head against the wall a to why we are being held hostage in our own country by illegal immigrants. My great grandfather immigrated in 1907 at the age of thirteen from Sweden and he learned English. I don't know what makes these people feel so damn special that we have to learn Spanish on our own country to talk to someone who is here because they broke the law and keep doing so. Unfortunately, while we have people pandering to illegal immigrants needs for income (In the DC area, you have to be able to speak Spanish to work at a Dunkin' Donuts, for pete's sake) your daughter might not even be able to get a job at McDonald's if she is not bilingual. It is a sad, sad, sad state of affairs today in America, and I fear that this is the tip of the iceburg.

It may affect her down the road when she will be dealing with AMERICAN citizens who speak Spanish. However, you have every right to be angry if the reason is so she can communicate with the illegal moochers in our school. I say get them all out!!!! The parents and their anchor babies need to go.

Spanish is a commonly taught second language. It might be different if they were going to teach her an esoteric language, like Norwegian; but Spanish is a widely spoken language.

I don't think you should use your daughters to make a political statement like that.

I think you are right! How DARE they force a language on her. She should be able to choose a language. The school can't do anything about this though. You have to call your locally elected school board. They set the curriculum not the school. The school's hands are tied.

It depends on where you live. In southern California, you would be wise to learn Spanish since there is a boatload of illegals running around there. Just about any border state would be that way, especially the southern sections.

If you lived in North Dakota or Michigan, it is a personal choice - there is no need.

The part about "she will have problems because she won't FIT IN" is a political tagline and a bunch of crap.

i agree. i'm a junior in high school and i refused to take spanish , so i took french.

i know it's bad to feel that way, but it's the truth. why should we have to worry about learning their language, when they don't even bother to learn ours. where i live is really close to florida and there are a lot of spanish people here that can hardly speak english.

i don't care if that maked me seem stupid, but it's the truth or at least thats my opinion, and how can someone's own opinion be wrong?

I took two years of spanish because it was required in High School. I failed both years...

I still have to take it in College... but after that, I will just forget it... Because I am American, I do not plan on going to Mexico, or Spain, or any other spanish country....

I think that if they wanna be in here, they need to learn english and become LEGAL...

It will hurt her more in terms of cognitive development. The brain is stimulated in certain ways by language acquisition beyond English. Also the latinate origin of a romance language like Spanish will help give her the tools to work with higher level vocabulary needed for something like the SAT.

By the way, Puerto Rico is a common wealth of the US and is considered part of our nation.

for 6 months now i have not once pressed one to proceed in English. not once have i had a problem. i figure it this way, if they do not proceed in English they do not need my business.

Although I understand your feelings, I think you're doing your daughter a disservice. Many years from now knowing Spanish will help your daughter to get a job. Give her the upper hand now.

Brother Cain as a fellow mason I must agree with your attitude. Allow me to encourage you to run for the school board. Ask your brethren to do the same! The lodge used to be in the forefront of the leadership of the nations education system. It is about time that we step up and assume that birthright once again. This will probably get frowned upon by many people and may even get a violation but the truth is not anyone's private purview to choose what was real and what was not. As a retired disabled Electrical Contractor who speaks Spanish, German, and some Russian, I also do not have any problem with learning other languages for use in visiting other countries. Anyone who is forcing it to allow others to break our laws are aiding and abetting a fourth degree felony and should be charged.

Edit: Most of the people who read your question missed your point entirely. When people break the law it is wrong. The school system is helping people break our laws and need to be held accountable.

I'm in my fourth year in spanish. And i enjoy it. No i'm not an illegal immigrant at all--i'm white, i just like the language. I don't think there's anything wrong with learning it....

Being forced P*sses me off. It is our country, speak our language.
But, since there are so many bleeding hearts out here trying to give away our country, learning Spanish might be a good idea.
She will need some language for college, if she is allowed by then by the powers that may be, there may be no room for citizens by then.
And if America does grow a set and fight for our country, we will need people who are loyal to The US who can communicate with the invaders.
I am learning Spanish, it will help if I ever have the opportunity to "interrogate" one of them.

If you are multi-lingual...then why are you so against learning Spanish. It is not only used by illegal aliens. Learning Spanish can be a great asset in finding a job or simply promoting knowledge. Shame on you for trying to inhibit legitimate education.

I support your beliefs. I am republican. I love our flag and believe it is important to teach diversity without imposing on the beliefs of our citizens. BUT...if your daughter learned Spanish, it would not just be to speak with illegal immigrants. Im going to leave it at that...but I understand your discouragment in the public school systems of the US today!

During my childhood in the 80s, they taught a little Spanish. I doubt they've stopped since then.

There are English speaking illegals in this country as well. I just thought I'd let you know. Your question is the most horrible and ethnocentric question I have ever seen. Learning Spanish wont hurt her, it may give her that extra edge she needs in life to be successful. My daughter is learning Arabic, Spanish and English. I guess you'll say that she can talk to terrorists and illegals huh? :P

We live in a great country. Knowing other languages opens the world up to us. Its a beautiful thing. Don't let your ignorance and bigotry stand in the way of your daughter's growth and expanding her knowledge.

ok adolf, this isnt a question and so what they speak spanish im more places than mexico and not everyone who speaks spanish is illigal. i know plaenty of spanish as a first language people who are legal.

Good for you - the illegals need to learn english. We should NOT be forced to learn their language in OUR own country just because they are too stupid or lazy to bother to try to learn the language of the country they sneaked into.

Due respect sir regardless of Illegal immigrants in this country Spanish is a widely spoken language, (I think second highest spoken language in the world), so it could help her if she ever visits other countries, so I think you should let her learn it.
