You can only live together in either country, with the non-citizen partner being able to work, if they have a visa to do so. Simply being married isn't nearly enough.
As an Australian citizen, your fiance/e can apply for a prospective spouse visa so that they can come to Australia and marry you (within 9 months of the visa grant). After marriage, they then apply for a spouse visa. Or you can marry (usually overseas) and then apply for a spouse visa. Either way, there is a waiting time of up to 6 months for the visa to be granted.

Similar visas are available for you to go to the USA and live and there are also waiting times for those, though I think they may be longer than 6 months. On a US fiance visa, you only have 90 days to marry. |

Not sure about the Australian visa process, but I can speak first hand on the American process. If you and your husband are still in Australia, then he will need to come to the states and file for a spousal visa. (although I have heard of going to the US consulate in the country you are in and try to get what is called a consular visa) It takes quiet a while to go the process and you will need to be in Australia to go for the interview. Depending on different countries, there are different time lines, and it could take 12-18 months to complete the process.
But yes, you can live in either country. I am sure Australia has visa procedures as well. |
