I need to move to Canada in order to stay with a friend who's parents just passed away. I'm a United States citizen and I just want to know the easiest way to acquire some kind of residency status in Canada.

Apply for citizenship with the Candian authorities. Most likely, visiting your friend is a start but you also have to support yourself too. Getting a job and not being a citizen is tricky. The only thing that is realistic is to visit your friend and ask first hand from the Canadian government what to do from that point to be a citizen.
By the way, some folks here act like they are the Canadian Government when most likely they are night shift a Tim Hortons! You need to ask the officials in Canada what to do not some yahoo at Yahoo. Good luck! Go Canada! |

What do you mean you "need" to move to Canada to stay with a friend?
Easiest way?
No such thing.
The only way is the same way as everyone else; apply to immigrate. Oh, and btw, you need to qualify to apply to immigrate - we don't take just anyone who says they want to. No country does that. If you think you can just fill out a form and come on in, you're very sadly mistaken. Nobody in immigration will understand why you think you "need" to move to Canada. In other words, they're going to think it's some kind of attempt to sneak into the country and, if they think that, you will be denied.
Instead, consider visiting your friend for a little while. You would not be able to stay permanently but you would be able to be there to support your friend. |

As Z said - there is NEVER any good reason to NEED to move to another country. If you NEED to move, then it is usually for a criminal reason or there is some kind of fraud involved.
You can visit for 6 months in Canada, but you MUST show proof that you WILL go home at the end of the visit and you MUST show that you have enough money to support yourself for the entire 6 months you are here.
You are NOT eligible to use the health system, (which means you pay for any visits to the doctior and you pay for any and all drug prescriptions you may need) and you are not eligible for any welfare. |
