Hi, im really stuck at the moment because im not sure how it works.I am 21, a uk citizen, and looking to move to california to start a new life and im not sure what i need to be legit there.I know a green card takes a while so in the mean time im guessing a visa to work and live there is an answer.Im not sure how long it take or how to go about it.What does help is that i am able to apply for an irish passport(some one told me that helps) and i have family that live in detroit and read somewhere they can apply for me but im not sure what kinda visa im after or any other details. please help

In US, before you can work there, you must have an employer to petition for you. In other words, the company wants to hire you. In that case, your employer need to submit I-129 petition for you to USCIS, and after being approved, you will get your I-797, which enables you to get a working visa.
If you do not mind spending some money, instead of working, you can study in US, for that you have to apply for Student Visa.

The type of passport Irish v British does not make much difference. For you, given your age, unless you have a degree in engineering most likely you will not have much luck being able to enter the US. Reason being, unlike the UK the US is quite restrictive in their immigration policies and only take those who can contribute to them economically. Furthermore you will have to be able to support yourself without help from the US government and since the US does not have a nationalized health service like the UK you will need to have allot saved to pay for medical costs. Finally in order for "family" to apply for you to enter you will have to be no older than 17 years of age and since you are 21 any family application is not possible.
At this point unless you have an engineering degree or a PhD then most likely you do not have enough skills for a work visa. My advice to you is to get a PhD in a science or technology field then apply for a work visa. |

You need an employer to sponsor you for an H-1B visa (You need a university degree in the sciences or engineering) you need to marry a US citizen, you need your employer to transfer you to their US office, you need to be rich, you need a job lined up as an au pair, or you need to be a famous entertainer.
Otherwise, you cannot move to the USA. |

just go to the american consulate or embassy and make an appointment. as an english citizen you should be able to get a greencard easy....
just go be glad you are from that country... and not from others where its so hard to get here... |
