Hey, I live in Australia and I want to move to England. Do you have to keep renewing your visa or is there something else you have to do? My mum said you have to become a citizen, does anyone know how I do that? (sorry if this is in the wrong category)
Additional Details
I mean I want to move permanently(sp?) working visas expire after a few years. I don't want to move back to Australia so the move will be PERMANENT.

I can't for the life of me understand why an Australian would want to live permanently in England when so many English people are desperate to come here. Oh well, each to her own!
Now to answer your question as well as I can. Apart from entering on a Working Holiday visa which is not renewable, you must qualify to enter England and be allowed to work. Qualification can be on the basis of ancestry if one of your parents or grandparents is a British citizen by birth (an Ancestry visa) or you can qualify as a skilled immigrant. An Ancestry visa means that you will be you will be given Leave to Remain for up to 5 years. After that time, if you still want to stay, you can apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) and 'indefinite' means just that - you would not need to keep renewing. Citizenship is an additional step beyond ILR but you don't need it if you have ILR and intend staying there permanently.
If you come as a skilled worker, you will be given Leave to Remain for up to 3 years and at the end of that time, may apply for an extension to take your time in the UK up to 5 years. Once you've been legally in the UK for 5 years, you can apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). |

I agree with Kitty, I hate the UK.
Weather is crap, the people here are snooty, I can't wait to leave the UK, I would give you my citizenship in a heartbeat if i could. |
