If English becomes the official language of the U.S., where does that leave poor George W. Bush?

This is a funny topic since the Senate yesterday tripped all over itself to endorse English to the extent that it is unclear what the Senate Bill would call for at this point.

First they voted by large majority to add to their Senate Bill that English would be the 'national' language. Immediately afterwords, they voted by large majority that English would be a 'common and unifying language'. (Neither one stops election or health care etc. translations into other languages.)

As to what this will mean to George Bush, by the time people figure out the intent of the law (if passed) he will be back in Texas.

President Bush Speaks fluent Texan and was not required to learn English as a Second Language. While our government may not have ever placed it in our constitution that the National Language would be English, our founding fathers certainly debated it and English won out over German. All of our documents have been written first in English, the Congressional Record is in English the fact that this has been going on for over 200 years certainly gets English's foot in the door as first choice if not in fact officially the Language of the U.S.A. It is required to take the citizenship test in English and to have a good command of the language to do it. This applies to those who have reached their residency requirement of 5 years until 15 years at which time the test will be given in your native tongue. We try to make immigrants learn English, however if they don't in the first 15 years here they are probably going to never learn.

Maybe it is time to make it our official language, however even then we will have good citizens that may never learn the language very well and they will still be good citizens. It is tradition here that English is spoke for Americans in everyday life and should remain as such.

The problem with Bush is not his English language,the problem with Bush is the wrong things he says using the English language,as for being deported,he probably will be among less mexicans in mexico than we'll have over here,courtesy of Mr.Bush and the democrats in the senate

The United States doesn't have an official language because it is a land of immigrants from many different countries. When we were ruled by the British, English became the main language spoken here. After our Independence, the English language continued its course but does not necessarily mean it is the official language. People make the assumption that America means speaking English, but we have to remember our Independence made it possible for us to break all ties with England as to establishing what language we are to speak. However, since the majority do speak English, it now should be made the official language so as to do away with confusions and controversies about what language we are going to establish as our own.

I just answered a question about Bush hiring soon to be Ex Mexican President Fox to be the new head of the Border Patrol...It would be appropriate for Fox to have to deport Bush wouldn't it? More people in New York speak spanish than English already.

The point surely however is that English is the international business language and has been for over 150 years. Therefore isnt it a good idea if you keep the official language of the country one which is international in terms of commerce.

Also if you want a racially integrated country, you cannot do that if all the ethnic groups stick to their own communities and customs.

A lot of people need to watch TV,pick up a news paper, go to CNN.com and find that today law makers where passing a law that would make American English the official language of the United States of America....and they say deport them because they don`t know English and don`t want to learn about America.... Shameful!!!!!

there would probably be a clause that exempts the terminally ignorant if legislation were passed making english the official language of the us, so he would be safe from deportation.

Considering many Americans don't know basic US history, let alone simple things like the National Anthem? We might be in trouble. Y'know, more than we already are. I'm not altogether opposed of English being our national language though, so long as there are ample opportunities for people to learn it. It's not easy to pick up a new language on your own, and I don't know that there's many reasonably priced ways for a non-native born citizen to learn it.

English is the official language-decided a long time ago when we first became a New nation. Many came here (Polish Greek Italian Irish Swedish ect) and they continued with English- AS the Nation's language. It was taught in schools and used in government. They didn't change it to theirs (Duh). To pretend different is plain silly. It became that way and stayed that way.

As far as Bush-he is not a speaker.. But I have seen many look and speak so well-who are the biggest snakes in the world.!!!!!!!!!! And foolish people believe them just because it sounds good or looks well. They say Satan was a good talker and was beautiful and deceived many. This will continue until foolish people start looking at what is said instead of how.

No, but seriously, George W. Bush is the decider of all things religious, American, and oil based, so English and the manipulation of it is left to people like his press secretary. It's not English he has a problem with entirely, but reading/memorizing English as it has been chosen for him.

By the way, based on the answer Empy gave, I have a strong suspicion a "t" was left out of the name.
