If I am a legal immigrant to this country, shouldn't I be allowed to hold on to my culture? Yes/no-And why?

Of course you should be allowed to hold on to your culture...as long as you aren't trying to force your culture onto other people, or change their culture to suit you. For example, if I were mentally and physically retarded and decided to move to France, I wouldn't expect the French to learn to communicate with me in English or expect them to install ramps everywhere, so that I could get around in my wheelchair better, or expect the country to support me via welfare, and then claim discrimination when the French complained about doing that. Lots of immigrants to the U.S. expect current citizens to change their culture, and most people don't want to do that. Most people here welcome any immigrants who come in legally, work for a living and learn the language: English. Aside from that, you can do whatever you want within the limits of the law. Live and let live.

Yes that is your right as a legal immigrant to hold on to your culture Just don"t practice the parts of your culture that are illegal in this country. we have many different cultural groups here in the U.S. and i have been to many different cultural celebrations in the area of the country that I live in Also please respect others culture's if you expect people to show respect for yours

To be on the negative side, I say no. You gave up your rights from your home country to come here. To hold on to your culture from your home country is your "right" in the US. That's a given. However, if you use your culture as a mere excuse to exploit your freedom, I deem that as ridiculous and quite disgraceful to the country that could have thrown you out. If you're here for a better opportunity in life, that's one thing. To leave your country and to go into another one and exploit your culture, that's idiotic. It doesn't matter which country you come from or go to, you abandoned you culture to adapt to a new one.

Why would you want to come to the U.S. if you are so determined to hold onto your own "culture"? If you love your own culture, then stay there and enjoy it.
If you live in the US, you have every right to enjoy whatever culture you want, but Americans shouldn't have to change THEIR culture to suit you. If I moved to Germany, I would learn the German language, learn German history and try to become a good German citizen obeying its laws and learning its customs. I wouldn't ask Germans to change for me.

The hateful part of me wants to say no, but I know it is only right to let you do so. This country is all about ethnic diversity, I just do not want the simulation of the American people into another culture. Come to think of it, I do not even believe that Americans have a culture. So hold on to your culture but do not throw it in my face.

Yes, but you may have to compromise on some things for whatever reason for example, if in your culture you're allowed many wives but that's illegal in the country you're in then you're only allowed one, that kinda thing and as long as you don't expect anyone else to adapt to you, if you want to keep your culture then you shouldn't've left your original country.

you can do whatever you want in the privacy of your own home (provided it is legal).

when out in society, you should try to conform to the norms of that society.

one example would be speaking english. if all legal immigrants spoke their native tongues, we would have a rather difficult time understanding each other. however, if they speak their native language at home with their families, and pass that on to their children, then that is cool.

I think yes,but at the same time people that have been here from day one (past generations) included,we have a right to keep our heritage alive but I am from the south,The conferderate flag IS my heritage but so many people find it offensive,and I think to each his own If people with African heritage can wear african colors,and Spanish heritage can also then WHY as a Southerner can't I wear a shirt with a rebel Flag on it with out people crying that it is racist,or demeaning? after all it is my HERITAGE!!

yes, people come here for the diversity. The problem arises when immigrants try to change america and its law to accomodate them more. You then run into the problem of all races religions etc wanting the united states to conform for them too.

It is so wonderful to be an ameican and i would expect that everyone have that chance. I'm sure my family came from europe somewhere and loving my life here. So, why would i say it is different. I love this country. Pay taxes. Girl who is a Woman. with respect to everyone.. i got a chance in life too :)

My answer is YES. However, there's a difference between holding on and being proud of your culture, and "I'm going to shove my culture down your throat". Excess is always a bad thing. If I am an immigrant, I would not expect other cultures to like mine, the reason is...it's not their's to like, to understand, and to accept. I will however try my best to blend in with the rest because I am the immigrant and I am the one who needs to adjust to my new surrounding.
