If I am a permanent resident of Canada, can I serve in the military?

I really want to serve in the Canadian Forces and the recruiting website doesn't mention permanent residents at all. Would I have to wait until I was a citizen before I can join or is there some other way I am not aware?

From what I understand (through information from my friend) you can join the reserves but not active duty.
