Assuming my child is not born in Italy. My mom is from Italy and my dad is American so I have a dual citizenship. I'm not actually having a kid...im only a teen but I was wondering how all this citizenship stuff works, thanks! Additional Details NOT born in Italy

Your child can be a dual citizen. Just apply with the Italian immigration for dual citizenship. You will need to be able to verify and prove the link with Italy.
As for the American citizenship goes, your child will ALWAYS be American, irregardless of dual citizenship. Your child will NOT have to choose the US citizenship in order to keep it. I am not sure about the Italian side of it, but I know adults who hold Italian/American citizenship, so I would say that Italy doesn't make you choose either. |

If born in US.. The new born would be US citizen
If born in Italy .. the new born would be Italian citizen
Since you have Italian roots he/she can obtain Italian citizenship ( dual citizenship ) if born in US. |

NO
Italian citizenship is passed down by blood and only one generation .
you are a first generation born outside of Italy because your parents were born in italy. Since you were not born in italy so you cannot pass your italian citizsenship to your child unless they were born in italy. |

When you have a child your child will have dual citizenship. As long as you meet the following requirements:
A child born outside of the United States acquires U.S. citizenship at birth when the child meets the transmission requirements as follows:
Birth Abroad to Two U.S. Citizen Parents in Wedlock: A child born abroad to two U.S. citizen parents acquires U.S. citizenship at birth, provided that one of the citizen parents has resided in the U.S. or a U.S. possession prior to the child's birth as indicated in Section 301(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. (INA).
Birth Abroad to One Citizen and Alien Parent in Wedlock: A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301 (g) of the INA, provided the U.S. citizen parent was physically present in the U.S. prior to the birth of the child for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child's birth. For birth on or after November 14, 1986, a period of five years physical presence, two of which come after the age of fourteen, is required.
In any case you will have to register the child with the country or countries where the child is NOT born.
Good Luck! |

If your child is born in America, you can apply for Italian citizenship for him or her and vice versa. |

It would depend on what country the child was born in. |

Yes, by your decision until the child comes of age, usually at 18. At 18 your child would have to decide and declare, one way or the other. |
