The primary obligation of a company is to its shareholders. It will always do what is best for them. The prudent way is to close shop and move somewhere else. That is why many american companies have moved overseas. The pay is cheap, no unions, and the quality is the same. Where does Walmart buy its goods? Where are the call centers servicing the US based? It is always about the bottom line.
Going back, the host country will bend (usually) to the multinational because it brings investments & employment to its country/citizens. (taxes). |

While the company is accountable to their stockholders, and are charged with running the company to maximize the value to the shareholders, the company must also obey the laws of each country they operate in. Both stockholder interests and the laws of the country where the office/division is located must be factored into any business decision.
Note that just because there is a lower return to shareholders at present does not mean the company made a bad decision. Sometimes you have to open an office and take time & investment to build it. Sometimes there are growth factors (a rapidly changing demographic or economic boom in development or whatever) which dictate getting in early in order to participate in or enhance such developments. It is not current return but future returns which matter most. |
