I married a foreign national. It took 2 years for her to become a permanent resident. You can then apply for citizenship 2 years 9 months after the date permanent residence is approved. It then takes over a year before you can actually become a US citizen. In total it takes about 6 years to become a US citizen(it may be longer now). In the mean time you are banned from certain government programs(you signed the paper work that you would support this immigrant at least 125% above the poverty level without government help). You are also financially responsible for the immigrant(he best have health insurance and not out to screw you). Now if he is a legal immigrant he should already have a immigrant visa number so marrying him wouldn't make a difference unless you want to speed up citizenship(you have to wait 5 years before you can apply for citizenship if you are not married to a US citizen). In that case there are a different set of laws. If the immigrant is here illegally the government can void the marriage, deport the immigrant and throw you in jail. |

Immigration has cracked down on fraud marriages. You should know that there are criminal penalties for marriage fraud. Should you be found out, the immigrant would likely be denied immigration benefits permanently. This isn't the 80's anymore when Immigration was lax in checking on marriages. |

If you're dumb enough to do it, I hope you both get busted. |

instead of marrying him and having another problem on our hands, why don't you just go to Mexico with him?!! |

You would have to stay married until he applies to become an american citizen. The process usually takes about 3 years once the Immigrant becomes one, than he can vote, anything except for run for president.
It's legal if it's a legal immigrant. |

Surely it's not illegal to marry a non American citizen (if you are an American) if you are truely in love???
Excuse my ignorance - But I'm from the other side of the globe (New Zealand) & that sounds just wrong?? Surely Americans are allowed to marry non-americans (I know here in NZ - American citizens apply for residency in NZ when they have a genuine relationship with a NZ citizen)
It seems heaps of people responding to your questions are just saying 'No' assuming your doing something dogey??
Of course if this is some sort of fake marriage just for your somebody to come into the country & become a citizen - then Yes!!! this would/should be illegal & should not be done! |

You know you can go to jail for doing that? |

that is ILLEGAL. if you plan on divorcing him later - and you are marrying him just get a green card - that is illegal, and I do sincerely hope you go to jail and he gets deported.
BEREN - That fact that she is asking about "how long to STAY married until he becomes a legal resident" before she is even married - that totally smacks of her wanting to stay married for the SHORTEST time possible - which means the marriage is not genuine.
If you were truely in love you would NOT be asking those kinds of questions, at all.
Thats why everyone is rightly assuming she is doing something illegal. |

I believe you have to be legally married for five years and reside at the same residence. At the interview they do asked some personal info to make sure you are indeed married. If you are doing this as a favor to help someone, then I would suggest think very hard before you do it. It is illegal and further more, what if you meet mr. right in the interim then what would you do. |

I hope he fleeces you for every penny and you end up going to jail for doing something that is plainly illegal. |

You are a part of the problem with this country!!!!You are dishonest and despicable. Think of all the soldiers that lost their lives fighting for this country so you could live a free life and sneak illegal people in this country and marry them. Talk about rotten!!!!! |

Well I think you have to be a resident in America for at least 5yrs...then you need to file papers for your "significant other" to become a citizen which costs about 1000$...then it takes about 1yr until all the stuff gets through... |

Thats not even the question you should be asking its illegal to do this and i very strongly disagre with it! |

Don't do it!!!! First of all it's illegal and secondly you have to stay married long enough to make them THINK you are/were truly married.
I know someone who did this many, many years ago and for 6 years she had to "secretly" date. They lived together for just over a year after they got married.....only as friends! And then they separated and spent years that way but would check in occassionally as "married". She changed her name and everything. Even tho' nowadays it 's ok for the woman to keep her name....she did it make it look more legit. If you don't they will question it and WATCH you!
Are you prepared for all the WHAT IF's???? (consequences if you get caught) |
