If someone comes from overseas and marries some bum on the street, do they become an American citizen?
Find answers to your legal question.

If someone comes from overseas and marries some bum on the street, do they become an American citizen?

RapidVisa
No. The minimum income requirement to sponsor a fiance or spouse is $18,212. This must be legally reported income. A bum on the street would not have this income.

Ginger
No, lol!!!

Being married in the US does not grant anyone automatic citizenship.

Depends if the bum on the street can afford the proper paperwork which also includes guidelines as far as financial support. Then you could technically start the process which is getting a green card and eventually becoming a citizen.

Of course would never happen that way as a bum off the street couldn't afford the financial requirements or the costs of the paperwork. Also proof of a real relationship would be required which is doubtful to get off some bum on the streets.

Penny
No--sorry , it does not work that way !!!

No, you must have a petitioner. The petitioner has to prove that they can financially support the immigrant so they don't become a charge of the state (welfare, etc.). You have to prove that your marriage is legitimate (for love, and not obtain a green card). You have to apply for the green card, go through an interview process, etc. etc. It takes a long time.

No one can become US citizen just by marrying a citizen. It takes around 5 years to get citizenship. After getting married you better half needs to prove that she is strong enough to support you financially. Lot of documents are required and she will have to handle all those things. After which you may get permanent residence status (Green Card). After getting a Green Card you can apply for citizenship of US after 3 years.

no, because if it is really a bum living on the street they are not going to have sufficient funds to guarantee that their spouse is not going to be a burden to the US government for the next 10 years.
However, you would still be married, and a smart bum would make sure to get something out of the divorce.

clueless...
No, because you were not born here and none of your parents or grandparents weren't either. You would have to take this citizenship test, and that's how.
