If there were no illegal aliens to provide cheap labor in the US, what would happen to the U.S. economy?

Well, recently I have observed that the price of fruit and vegetables has increased greatly.

It looks like the ilegals who were working on the fields were deported and the citizens, instead of rushing to take those jobs, are still at home collecting unemployement

It would improve on the exponential level. We will not spend billions each year on incarcerating them, nor will we provide their health care and education.
We will still have the citizen offspring of these illegals, plus the able bodied lazy for the cheap labor.

Crime will go down, academic performance will rise, race problems will drop, and neighborhoods will stop deteriorating. Taxes may even go down.

It would thrive, people would have jobs back, crime would be reduced. Teenagers would be able to work and help support families and themselves. The economy would not hurt, the teenagers and others who would take these jobs would be spending more money putting back into the economy. Without illegals, this country would do 100% better.

Cheap labor? Sure they are cheap to employ. Then we have to pay for their free education (which is a recenly passed law here in Cali), pay for thier childrens education, provide hospital care, and don't pay taxes on their money, which means they don't contribute.

Oh and the money that they do earn normaly goes back to Mexico anyway - so we get nothing.

More citizens would be working, and putting more money back into the economy. Teens could find more jobs so they could spend money on the things they want, and save money to go to collage. Small business could actually compete creating more jobs. Wages would go up to create a better living standard amongst the lower income. And the money currently leaving the U.S. (98 billion a year) to boost the economy of other countries would stay here going back into ours. And with the illegals back in their home country maybe they would start demanding a better life from their own government instead of demanding it here, and creating unnecessary strife.

Edit: Oh, and people like Greasy would have to find honest work.

The idea that illegal aliens are needed to do cheap labor is more liberal racism. If a foreigner wishes to come here to work they are more then welcome. They need a temporary visa for their stay.

that is the biggest lie cop-out piece of propaganda about criminal immigrants there is! 1rst of all most criminal aliens are paid the same wages as every one else. the employers save money by not paying taxes, benefits & insurance on these criminals. 2nd for the few jobs that are below wage, if there weren't criminal aliens to do them then the scumbag employer would just have to pay a decent wage, it would just cut into there profit some!

I have to agree with the rest that it would probably improve. I consider myself a progressive (liberal if you must) but i have to stand with the conservatives on the illegal immigrant issue. If people are not paying their share in taxes (and any illegal paying taxes is committing fraud because somehow they have gotten an ID # which they should not have) yet they are making money as well as getting free education and other benefits we are losing money. As someone else pointed out they may work for a cheap salary or rate, BUT in fact we pay a lot more for that labor in lost taxes, revenue and the money put out for their children's free education and other benefits such as health care. Not to mention that most of the money they earn they do not spend here but send it back to Mexico.

I also must agree that it is ironic that people will come here and protest yet they will not demand a better life in their own country. Mexico is a mess but there are still things that could be done there with a grass roots movement. The government is more or less democratic (albeit corrupt) but they are not going to shoot people (I don't think) for staging a peaceful manifestation or strike.

We do exploit by owning plants and factories in Mexico near the border because we pay them less than we would Americans.

I also agree that in this economy there are plenty of Americans out of work who would do some of these jobs that they wouldn't have considered doing before.

Since the government does not have the manpower or willpower to police these companies and individuals hiring illegal aliens, perhaps they should offer a carrot instead of a stick to companies that produce their books and show that they have hired no illegals. Maybe a company that proves that they have not hired illegal immigrants should receive some kind of tax break or subsidy. This might make some of these companies more likely to give jobs to legal immigrants and citizens rather than break the law and give them to illegals just because it is cheaper for them.

Another solution is to establish some type of guest worker program with Mexico in that Mexico must pay a fee for each visa process for a guest worker so that these people coming over to work would have to pay taxes (since they would be on the books) and also Mexico would be held accountable for their citizens coming over here and though they would still get a sizable amount of their income at least it would be taxed, these people could be tracked, and also Mexico would contribute something (in the visa fee). I think it might also help to keep track of any criminal activity committed by the "guest workers" since both the U.S. and Mexico would know where they were. And if they committed a crime there could be some kind of clause in the guest work visa that they had to be expedited back to Mexico and be tried under a Mexican court or stay here and be tried but they would not just be deported and then sneak back to the U.S. later.

I could get a better job. Everyone I know could get a better job. And hey what about 100 years ago when we didn't have as much influx from illegals as we do now? When people came to be American citizens and not leach us for every penny our economy was in great shape. So if we did it then we could do it again. The greedy business owners will have to take a small pay cut ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh one less trip to the bahamas that year. Poor them.

There are plenty of Americans out of work, and nothing encourages someone to alter their perspective when the rent is due.

I think our Economy would probably improve a little, but the Mexican economy might suffer from the loss of cash infusion.

Personally I welcome Mexicans here... their great neighbors. But... I think with 12 million here, some need to get home sick.

united states citizens put more money in the economy then legal immigrants. legal immigrants put more money in the economy then illegals do. illegals send their money to their own country's.
