The Brit who works in these places your mentioned do work there because there is NO other way they find jobs. The bulk of these places staff are indeed non Brits.
As why immigrants work for minimum wage, it is because the employers are taking advantage of them. That is nasty.
Brits lack many skills, and abilities that colleges bribe 16-19 and other adult with weekly 30 pounds/ week to train them to fill such lack of skills.

Brits have to be afraid now, the Poles are already here.

YOU LIVE IN SOUTH WALES. In south wales there aren't many jobs, so as a result not many people comer there. So no, in south wales there isn't much of a need for immigrants but then you don't get many either.

I live in south london, and things there are rather different, lots of jobs, lots of immigrants. Not just in low-paid jobs either, my boss was born in india.

I have been in recruitment for 5 years and it is usually so hard to get people from the UK to take minimum wage roles, especially if they have to travel more than a couple of miles to get there.

I especially have problems with graduates, many instantly want Â£14k a year at least just because they have a degree and most of them do not understand that a degree in philosophy, English or whatever with no experience of work is not something valued by employers.

The brits invaded so many countries in the past and colonised these countries, These people were forced to follow British ruling on their own lands and were also forced into the UK during the war. They were refused repatriation rights after the war which meant that they were forced to stay in Britain.

This is the price Britian has to pay for its evil doings in the past.

We don't need immigrants. Someone who lives in your country is willing to do the jobs as they had to way before immigration was a concern. They might want a higher wage for it, but oh well. Immigrants do help to grow an economy just because they are extra people who consume products in the country they live in. But they do not do jobs that nobody else will do.

I have lived and worked (on contracts) in Cardiff on and off for many years, I have always held up Cardiff to be the Cosmopolitan centre of the UK! I really like the people, (of all nations) who live and work in the area, they seem to get on very well!
I was lucky I suppose being in a very skilled and sought after trade, but I didnt just sit tight and wait for work to come to me or look around my neighbourhood (10 miles to work? is that difficult even on a low income)!!
I just wish you wouldnt put your b/f problems down to immigrants! Immigrants are people like you and I , they are looking fpr honest work to enable them to bring up a family, who will eventually be raised to be fellow citezens, just like you our b/f and I.
Now back to your immediate problem, (I've finished my little rant)!
I hardly ever take my car to a garage for repair or whatever, I use a feller who will come to my door, not rip me off and do a good job, cant your b/f do that? What will he need, some tools, and some knowledge, he must have them??
Perhaps I misunderstood and hes not a motor mechanic?
In which case I suggest he become a contract worker, tell him to look in the 'Daily Telegraph' newspaper, every Thursday under vacancies 'Engineering' plenty of contract work there, very good money, but it means working away from home !! Is that a problem?
Just a few hints, but dont give up either of you, and above all dont blame immigrants they are just people like us doing their best to make a living!!
I have worked in most of their countries and have always been treated with respect, Yes even in Muslim countries!
In fact the place I got most hassle from was in Aberdeen Scotland, and that was because I let slip I was born in Glasgow!!

I'm not sure your arguments even valid how many immigrants could possibly live in South Wales and if that's the case no british person would have a job in London. It sounds to me like you're just trying to find a scapegoat for the fact that your boyfriend is having trouble finding a job.

i agree 100% and its not just the low paid jobs they are taking..i have worked with many a polish person and not all of them are good worker's as many are lead to be live..i was a supervisor in a factory and these people made my life hell 99% of them cant even speak english which is wrong if these people want to work in our country they should be forced to learn english before they can work here...the thing that gets me is they are getting jobs here without going though the hell of interview's and before they leave there own country its all wrong..and not only that,they are getting all the council housing as well i have many a friend who have been on council list's for years and these people are getting housing within weeks its a joke..in my block of flats there is a house in which 10 of them live in and the noise they make is a joke i once complained to them and they threatin to take me to court for been a racist when all i said to them to keep the noise down my child is trying to sleep..i predict that there could be civil unrest if the goverment let's this carry on and there is more of them due here next year...the goverment have messed this up big time

Training up, and paying to relocate workers is more expensive than importing an indian, as happened with my old company. It fired 35 design engineers and the next week a portacabin drew up outside with 35 immigrants sleeping in it all working for on $3 an hour. This happens because Britain is a cash slu.t. There is a process known as cosmpolitanisation of the wealthy. They will talk with another wealthy person from another nation, rather than talk with one from their own nation who earns less. Another manager from a local company sacked 100's of people and ran off to Poland with 17million of their pensions. No laws to protect us? I am a fully experienced Design Engineer and Architectural Technician, I was offered Â£6 an hour recently and this is less than a local cleaner.

I am a cleaner in the lower paid sector - Brit born and Welsh living and working in London. My firm always seems to have a problem getting workers. Most are a fine bunch of lads and gals from Africa - Nigeria actually. We also have one Pole and one Czech. The office staff are mainly Anglo-somethings. Quite a few people will turn their noses up at my job, which pays Â£5.50 an hour because they are too proud [prahd - as we say in London].

The African guys working with me are for the most part well educated and clever - one has recently left to pursue his lifelong ambition as an accountant. He managed this after getting through a City and Guilds cert thing. Another guy who worked with us until about a year ago, was actually a fully qualified doctor back home in Burma but had to requality in UK in order to work as a GP - he's now a GP - and so it goes

after the war there was a need for immigrants to build the country back up. then india and pakistans wars and the refugees - then everybodys refugees. I am British and should immigrate back there and if I have to I will work in a low paid job just to be there - my accent will come back in a couple of months - . Now all the northern cities and scottish along with wales and northern ireland are being invaded by asians, africans, slovaks and the like. You have to support your local party that is against immigration - that is your only hope to preserve England.

I read your questions and your additional information and can only agree with you. The reasons that we are having these problems is due to our government and we all have the right to vote one of the ways to make ourselves heard. What our righteous MPâ€™s donâ€™t seem to realise that the more this goes on the worse things will get, the British people will not put up with this forever treated as second class citizens in their own country. I will not be one of them but I can see more and more voting for the BNP as a way to show the government how they feel and worse.
What about the rights of the British people or do we have to wait until we are a minority before we can claim our rights without being called racists.

There are though some potential signs that Britain is beginning to struggle to soak up all these new arrivals. Unemployment has been rising this year to a level of about 1.5 million, and although this canâ€™t specifically be linked to recent immigration, it provides further ammunition for those opposed to allowing any more workers into the country. It is interesting to see that some of the biggest rises in unemployment have occurred in the South West (27% increase from April to June this year) and the East (15%) of England, which are areas with significant numbers of Polish immigrants, whereas regions such as the North West of England and Wales have seen unemployment fall. It should be held in mind though that at 4.8% Britainâ€™s unemployment rate is still very low compared to other developed countries such as the US (5.6%), France (9.5%), Germany (9.8%) and Spain (11.1%). Anecdotal evidence from Poles I have spoken to also suggests that many are coming to London in hope of earning some money but are finding an overcrowded employment market with few easy opportunities and are quickly returning home. In fact, those who stay in Poland, particularly skilled workers, are doing rather well due to the dearth of good-quality labour left after the mass emigration.

It seems undeniable that the latest wave of immigration has benefited Britainâ€™s economy, but the emerging signs of saturation in certain areas of the labour market and creeping unemployment has encouraged the view that perhaps the country should opt against opening itâ€™s doors to workers from Bulgaria and Romania next year. The right-wing press has been riddled with stories of how many tens of thousands of poor Eastern Europeans will be turning up on our doorstep; the latest warning from the Daily Mail is that 80,000 Moldovans have been literally queuing up to get hold of Romanian passports so that they can get on the first bus to London. One shouldnâ€™t though dismiss these stories as pure scaremongering. It was in fact the same newspapers and commentators who correctly predicted that the EUâ€™s expansion in 2004 would result in mass immigration, while the government and many others downplayed these stories and claimed that only a few thousand workers from the new member states would head for our shores. Of course one can disagree with the motives and ideology behind some anti-immigration rhetoric, but it is certainly an issue which needs to be addressed quickly and which the government needs to be better prepared for than last time round.

Encouragingly, the Home Secretary John Reid insists that Romanians and Bulgarians probably wonâ€™t be allowed the same access to British labour markets as happened in 2004. He promises to â€˜manage immigration carefully, including in respect to the forthcoming decision over Romania and Bulgaria...[with] all the necessary safeguards in place...to reassure the public that this movement will be managed fairly and competently.â€™ Although neither he nor Labour have yet come up with any exact proposals on the matter, it is clearly something they are working on. Migrationwatch, an anti-immigration think tank, hailed the speech as â€˜an important victory for those who believe that immigration must be brought under control.â€™ The group has warned that if no restrictions are placed on the labour market then some 300,000 Romanians and Bulgarians could come to Britain to work. They also point out that even if restrictions are in place, under EU law workers from the new member states would be free to â€˜visitâ€™ Britain and could then illegally find work.

It seems likely that the government will choose not to allow workers from Bulgaria and Romania free access to the British labour market, initially at least. This seems a fair course of action and one which, in the words of an ex-Cabinet minister, would allow the country some â€˜breathing spaceâ€™ to take in the latest wave of immigration, which seems to have peaked. Much criticism was thrown the governmentâ€™s way for how they managed, or rather failed to manage, this immigration over the last two years, and this time round it is important that they are prepared in advance and then carefully monitor and manage the situation over the coming years.
We shall see if the Government keeps its word!! Bet they don't!!

I work in employment and it's a FACT that many many indigenous people won't get out of bed for minimum wage, you're trying to tell me that they can't join an employment agency and get work? these agencies are crying out for recruits and that's where the economic migrants come in.

So you're against us moving overseas for work are you? I doubt it very much. It works both ways you sad sad individual.

And what you say about your friend who's a plumber is the biggest load of tosh I've heard, it's recognised by the government that there's a national shortage of skilled tradesmen like plumbers and electricians, that's why they have been encouraging people to train in these areas.

My two sons are both on the DSS and just lie around smoking hash all day. They both refuse to take menial jobs so why shouldn't the Poles get to do it?
