If you are married and filed for papers but due to illness your spouse dies what would happen?

Ok a friend of mine is here and he got married to someone he likes. They got married 2 years ago, filed for immigration papers (the guy is the immigrant and the wife is a citizen) and now she is pregnant with a child. Please dont get me the wrong way for asking this question but his wife has been very very sickly since from a very small ages she has been diagnosed with serious illness and also cancer and internal bleeding and death is possible so drs do not know if she will make it (i hope she does and everything will be ok) but if by chance she does pass away what would happen to his case? They went for an interview and the immigration suspected some questions were not answered the same so they sent over the questions to them and they answered them. I was just cuious what would happen with the case.

If the application they filed, I assume it was for his green card, is not approved and she passes away, the petition gets denied.

If she passes away after it is approved, he will get green card in mail.
