I (and my other managers) hired some people and collected the properly completed I-9 forms, but I never ran them through the E-Verify system until about a month or two later. They all came back as approved for employment but my boss insisted that he would be in legal trouble just for not entering the new employees. I wound up getting fired over it. I really just want an answer to this question and the E-Verify website doesn't mention taking any legal action other than for repeatedly hiring illegal workers.

No running your worker through E-Verify is optional not a requirement, what is a requirement is for them to be legal. So if you hired 100 people that were all legal and you didn't run them through E-Verify you would not be in trouble as they were legal. |

I was under the opinion that possible new hires were to be e-verified before they were hired, so it was against the rules to not have done that. Had they been discovered to not be legal, having been hired without the benefit of e-verify, you employer could have gotten into an awful lot of trouble. Unfortunately, I believe your employer was correct in letting you go for not fully doing your job. |
