When was there not? In the old days, immigrants would be checked for diseases before being allowed to enter the country, and if necessary they were quarantined until deemed safe.

Today, any dude or dudette can cross the Rio Grande carrying TB or the Swine Flu or any other disease and spread it around like cheap tuny stench and we'd be cooked.

Nothing against immigrants, but you know anything's possible today isn't it?

Yes, this is why we had Ellis Island. Now it is a museum...go figure. Mexicans have always come and gone across our border, though. I think it is irresponsible to say that there ISN'T a connection, but the same connection is applicable to wealthy jet-setters who fly from the US to Cancun, then return to the US the following week, after palling around for days with folks from every corner of the globe. What little delights are being brought home by the hotel maids, wait staff, tour guides, bartenders, etc? What are the vacationers bringing home to their families, schoolmates or coworkers in most of the world's developed nations? Epidemiology is a two-way street, but the flu hates timely medical intervention. I think we need to secure our border, while at the same time issuing enough visas to discourage circumventing the border. We issue only a few hundred thousand visas to Mexican citizens, while millions sneak through the back door. Wouldn't it be nice if those folks were being screened and vaccinated?

absolutely yes, some diseases which have not been in the U.S for years are starting to reappear, these are coming from many different illegals, africans and hispanics add to this list. Now even though many cases of swine flu were brought in by tourist, how many illegals with this will be sneaking across the border in order to get free medical and will infect everyone on their route.

To a great extent, yes. If the emigrant is from the lower class citizenry of a country, they stand a greater chance of having any number of diseases. The illegals have an even greater chance because the are usually of an even lower class. It is only because of lack of medical availability more than anything else.
When the European came to this continent they brought many diseases which devastated many of the Aborigine simply because their immune system had not had contact with these diseases. At any time one encounters an ailment, virus or bacteria which it has not had contact with over many generations to build an immunity, that exponent could and often does destroy those who have not the immunity but others are safe.
