Will this change your mind, or is it simply a fact that you don;t like immigrants and the fact they aren't increasing crime doesn't make any difference?

I often get confused that immigrants are blamed for 'taking our jobs' and also 'taking benefits and not working'. Not sure how they can be doing both.

I agree, any problem with this country (crime, the economy, the health service, education...) is blamed on immigration.
I heard recently that the kind of people who fear immigrants the most are those who previously did similar jobs - Ie. manual labour, agriculture, hospitalities... Yet there is no evidence that jobs are at risk; there are currently 600,000 advertised vacancies in the UK.
While immigration does bring its own problems, the biggest issue is with the (mostly white, British) 'underclass' and their many offspring happy to depend on benefits. |

If you think about what the report is saying, it does admit that the wave of immigration has increased crime.
What it says is that immigrants commit no more crime than anyone else, (9%) although the types of crime tend to be particular to certain nationalities.
If there is a sharp rise in population, and that population only commits the same amount of crime as before, it still amounts to more crime, as there are more people.
Unless resources are increased proportionally, there must be less ability to deal the resultant problem, and the figures fail to mention the additional difficulties of the language barrier, ignorance of local statutes, and cultural anomalies.
I don't believe Britain is anti immigration, Britain is anti, mass, short term immigration, that treats us as half wits while picking our pockets........and then telling us that it's good for us really.

There are many types of immigrant arriving here and they all bring different pressures and problems.
The flood of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants are bringing their 3rd world conflicts to our streets. There are no-go areas in B'ham, Yorkshire and parts of greater London.
The hordes of asylum seekers and families put undue pressure on our health , education and benefit systems and cost the local authorities millions in interpreters and other costs.
They often resort to illegal activities such as people smuggling, prostitution and drug dealing as the legitimate means to earn a living are closed to them and they don't speak the language. They don't belong here, are not wanted here and should be sent back.
The Eastern Europeans on the whole are fine. Most are educated, trained , speak English and come here to contribute. However, many of them simply come over without these attributes, end up doing extremely low paid menial jobs in poor conditions and this leads to its own particular problems associated with low pay, poor living conditions, pressure on the health service etc.
The other problem with East European labour is that it suppresses the pay rates for indigenous workers driving down their pay and worsening their conditions.
So who benefits. .......Employers through cheap, disposable labour and the Gov't through taxes and N I paid into it's coffers.
Who loses........the host population through violent, 3rd world no-go areas. Suppressed pay and worsening working conditions and an overstretched health, education and benefits system.
So yes Marky , for you to think mass immigration has resulted in some wonderful shangri-la that benefits all concerned shows me that you need to pull your head up out of the sand, come down from your Ivory Tower, leave your splendid isolation and Go SEE for yourself, or maybe life is too comfortable in your little bubble of perfection! |

Talking of immigrants increasing crime, get yourself down to Málaga between March and October, and you will certainly - on the Costa del Sol - see the other side of the coin...by the same people who, on return to England for a weekend to visit family (unless there's a warrant for them to be arrested for crimes in their homeland many years ago) will turn their nose up at 'Johnny Foreigners' who have 'destroyed' the UK. |

new labour say mass immigration is good but I, my friends & family have only experienced quality of life dropping in the last 5 - 8 years..

Edit - from Denmark - Come the first three months of this year, 2006, and we find 161 Immigrants and Descendents have been sentenced. This gives them a higher frequency of crime than the (statistical) Danes.
The Minister of Justice, Lene Espersen, did not take much time before her comments were that “we now see the “little-brother generation” taking after the “older-brother generation.” – they form criminal gangs. T%his must be prevented, as it has been successfully in the past.

So just because immigrants don't cause crime, is this a positive reason to start liking Britains immigration policy?
I think most people are concerned (rightly or wrongly) about immigrants taking jobs from people born in this country, so saying "at least they don't affect crime statistics" isn't really much of a defense. |

Putting the clip out of mind, I agree with lbear , I don't mind immigranrts, but the big BUT is that they do take our system for a ride. I think we should be like Australia, people have to show they have jobs and can support themselves whilst they are in the country. Labour has ruined the economy of this country. I live in a rather small cramped flat, and when I want to be placed on the housing list, the list is closed - such housing has been given away to immigrants. I pay my taxes, and a resident of this country, I expect good quality housing. Immigrants live in better conditions than me. I have gained qualifications and I work hard in a full time job, whereas, an immigrant can have the same money for sitting on the settee. Even though the government gets funding from the EU, this is not nearly enough. Thus all this damage to the economy is spiralling out of control - the government is using our taxes to keep them, getting into debt and cannot afford to run our public services. People lose their jobs, cannot pay their mortgages and declare bancrupty. More wasted money! Interests rates go hight....more people cannot afford or sell their houses...it's a cycle! The country WILL be in a mess at the next General Election, and I think Gordon Brown is losing the respect quickly. I don't respect the government, but which is seperate from not liking immigrants. People should come here and contribute to the country as they have a lot of new skills they can bring us.
With crime, gun crime is becoming more rife as different cultures bring in their ways. |

The UK must have very well mannered & disciplined illegals. I wish it was like that here in the U.S. where half of the felons are illegals, from murderers, rapist, thieves, & drug pushers. Regardless of whether illegals increase crimes, there are illegals committing crimes adding to indegenous crimes. In most countries illegals or legals committing crimes in someonelse's country is blatant disrespect and is representitive of their nation, tribe, and family. Much like how the Vikings sacked Ireland and Scothland.

No, I do not want an open door policy for immigrants, this country is already under immense strain so why do we have to have them?
For me personally, it has nothing to do with crime, benefits, or taking British jobs, but it does have to do with me contributing all my working life with tax and N.I. contributions to pay for my children's schools and my families welfare i.e. NHS, police force, ambulance, and also the extra strain that services are having to cope with (larger class sizes more time being spent on non English speaking pupils more money being spent on translators at schools hospitals and police stations and courts) Not to mention it brings more cars on already jammed roads andmore strain on crap public transport. And all of this is given to them straight away without no contributions whatsoever. It simply is not fair. Also what benefits do the indigenous people of this country gain?
Why are you for having more people in this already overwhelmed country? when we cannot provide adequte services for the population we already have

It was a fundamentally flawed investigation in the first place - any crime committed by immigrants would not have happened if they were not here in the first place so technically speaking just one murder by an immigrant would not have existed in this country if that immigrant had not been allowed in - thus you could read this as a rise.
Also just watching the past two weeks of the dispatches tv investigation concludes that immigrants are importing their foreign rivalrys and doing so on british streets.
I don't believe any statistics that are managed by the government. I see on the streets what is happening with my own eyes. |

I know what you mean. Immigrants are not the only perpertrators of crime. However, when we say immigrants are good for the country- if some come here and commit crime, then surely, overall they are actually adding to the crime rate. In a perfect world and also where the media up the benefits of immigration all the time too- perhaps the number of prison places taken up by immigrant foreigners is a worry after all. So in the end you may say that whilst law abiding immigrants should be treated better- those that commit crime here- should be deported.

My problem with ILLEGAL immigrants is, yes, they do take working class jobs and make it to where anyone in a supervisor position has to be bilingual to talk to them! You can't even work at Mickey D's in Arizona unless you are bilingual! An illegal immigrant doesn't have to learn English, though? Maybe we should quit being so tolerant of Spanish and make English the official language. All of the other immigrants learn English! Make it illegal to cater to Spanish speaking people. |

Its not "immigrants" I object to but the sheer volume of them. anyone can come here from the EU, with no checks on their background.
As for your getting "confused" well I suppose that can't be helped if you're not able to reason it out for yourself, but let me explain in short syllable words which should help not to "confuse" you.
Large amounts of immigrants create competition for jobs which allow employers to keep wages and offer the least favourable treatment to their employees. It also impacts on training for native Britons, if employers can easily fil their skilled needs with immigrants, why spend money on training our own people?
Does that make sense. Good.
Now to the "benefits" thing. SOME immigrants claim benefits. Working for the DWP I have to book interpreters to accompany them to their benefit appointments. Others get social housing whilst homeless British families are refused. Understand?
Immigration is a problem in this country. Its not "immigrants" themselves and to say "Is it simply a fact that you don't like immigrants" shows how facile and unsophisticated your reasoning is. I have no problem with "immigrants" themselves. I spent several years studying classical Indian dance and music and many of my best friends are Indian. My problem is that at the moment the Government is not controlling immigration at all. Too many are coming from the EU. People are coming here from outside the EU and bringing families with them. There are not enough checks done on these people. And most of my friends whose families came here from India 30-odd years ago agree!! THEY feel immigration is out of control too!
Really a little thought would maybe explain to you why some people have a problem with immigration in this country. To say that anyone who complains about it "doesn't like immigrants" is just childish. Most people have no probem with the individual immigrants themselves, they are angry and frustrated at the way this Government is handling the whole issue. |

this report refers to the crime caused by Eastern Europeans......not much of a problem if you exclude driving issues, human trafficking and drunkenness
some police forces still say a disproportionate amount of crime suspects are eastern European immigrants (Cambridge)
it does not tackle the issue of immigrants from outside the EU and the problems caused by children of immigrants from outside the EU - gang crime, drug crime, gang crime, etc
or why some immigrant areas are no-go for anyone from outside of that community
the report is skewed to try to give the impression that things are alright then and the crime is commited by people already here..... much of this i would agree with ..... but it is disproportionately commit ed by immigrants from non EU countries.....

Believe it or not everyone, even the most liberal have a tolerance. And one day when you walk out of your front door and the area around you resembles the middle east im sure that dangerous liberal mindset you have will begin to change.
Why must we be forced to have this ideal of compulsory multi-culturalism. Whats the ultimate aim of it all? Its obvious why almost all people come here. There are so many arguments against it and very few for mass immigration. I have travelled the world extensively and seen how different other cultures and beliefs are. This idea that throw them all in together and expect them to be holding hands and singing songs will not happen. Like the muslim and asian ghettos that have formed in the north of england. So they come here and keep everything their religion and culture has but take an area of england and turn it into downtown islamabad. Im i the only one that sees this as seriously taking the p**s.
Maybe one day youll be on some public transport and a young man who has grown up in one of these ghettos will be on the bus as well. No one ever wanted to stop these areas from forming and so some very worrying attitudes have developed. So when that young man stands up and shouts 'allah akbar', youll have about maybe a second to realise how wrong you and all the pro-immigration people really are. |

I don't think of myself as an Immigrant basher but I am against Illegal Immigration. I'm afraid I don't remember my source, TV I believe, that talked about women getting into America right before their babies are born so the child will be an American citizen. I don't believe this is right. I understand your point about a. taking away jobs or b. not working and taking our benefits. I"m not sure if they take away jobs or just doing jobs that don't pay enough for Americans to do them. For that I blame the companies for not paying a decent salary. Immigrants not working, can't speak any English and yet get benefits, for that I blame the system under which benefits are obtained. I think that immigrants ADD to the crime in the US but as to whether it has actually increased it a great deal or not I can't pretend to know. Something has to be done for immigration but again, I can't tell you what that would be. It's probably far more complex than even I realize. |

People are very good at making others scapegoats for a country's social and economic problems........what needs to be remembered is that EVERYONE at one time or another in this country WAS an immigrant....however i agree that the real problems lie with illegal trafficking and over stayer's...Edit: this is a hot topic ....but unfortunately regarding taking our jobs there will always be illegal immigrants that will do a job for less money than a legal worker or a British national a fact of today's life I'm afraid !

The street gangs of UK are mainly made up of Black and Asian youths.
No matter what, a black and Asian face is not a native British face.
When a person so obviously in their 30s comes on TV and starts spouting on, I'm not impressed. I'm 66 and know what this country was like in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s before mass immigration started to destroy our country and up the crime rates.
We now have armed fuzz - something quite new.
There is hardly any British culture now on TV - fact is I'll go so far that there is none.
