I was reading an article the other day about US expats who renounced their US citizenship for Aussie citizenship because they were being double taxed (by the Aussies and by Uncle Sam). Reasoning that they were more successful in Australia, they let go of their US birthright.
Now, when they come to the US, they can stay 90 days, just like all the other non-US citizens.
So my question is, are there countries out there whose citizenship is equal to having US Citizenship? Canada, Australia, UK, France, New Zealand?

I don't really understand what you mean about other countries having equal citizenship and in any case, the basic premise of that article was wrong.
While US citizens have to file US tax returns even if they live in another country, the USA has tax treaties with 60 odd countries (including Australia and all of the other countries you've named) which means that they DO NOT pay double taxation. Renouncing US citizenship for tax reasons is both stupid and unnecessary.

My husband and I are dual US/Australian citizens and we file returns in both countries, but only pay one lot of tax. It can be a bit complicated, but our accountant sorts it out and doesn't charge much to do so. |
