Is an "English Only" sign offensive??

Other immigrants had to learn English as part of living in this country and anyone that is too lazy to learn should go back to their native country and continue to live in poverty. The people who object to learning English are the same ones that take public assistance and use our medical system at the expense of those that understand English. English learn it or leave would be my sign.

I agree with you that those upset have perverted the "Freedom of Speech" portion of the constitution. Which was written in English not Spanish. When I have travelled into Mexico I try to speak their language and pay for items with Pesos. I do this out of respect for their country and culture. Refusing to learn English and use American Dollars is disrespectful to my country.

It is a bit IN YOUR FACE, but I do agree with him. I know we are a land of many races, creeds and origins, but if you are going to live in this country, you have to learn to speak the language. I would never move to another country and then not learn to speak their language. Why should the whole country change for a handful of people? It shouldn't. I am not saying to leave your culture or language behind and forget it. I am saying learn the language of the country you are living in to get along and be able to function in that society. If it is, then the USA immigration department has a problem. The new law nows says that in order to become a US citizen, you must learn English and understand it. If Geno is wrong so is the USA.

"This is AMERICA ... WHEN ORDERING, 'SPEAK ENGLISH.' "

Hmmm. He quoted that he doesn't refuse business from non-speaking customers. He just has the sign there to make a point.

I agree with you for the simple fact English is the national language. When you go to another country they expect you to speak their language. they don't conform because of your lack of knowlage. either you speak their language or your just outta luck.

you know this question is gonna offend someone out there but ya know what you came to America.....speak english or go home to whatever land it is you are from.

I am too young a member to be able to rate, but kudos to all of you who said it was ok to post a sign. Not only is he legally able to do that, he is taking a stand on one of the few issues conservatives can take a stand on without getting crushed or looking horrible. For example: I am in the Air Force, and support the war in Iraq. Of course, I have concerns, questions, but I know that the President and his cabinet know infintely more than I will ever know about the topic from day to day, since they get daily, in depth Intelligence on what goes on there. But I can't go on CNN with my sign that says "I'm for war!" since that makes me look like a psycho war monger. But, Barbra Streisand and the other left wing, high school eduacted, geniuses in Hollywood are fine being anti-war. Who doesn't want peace! I do, but I know as long as human beings are human beings, there will be conflict. Most people also believe in profiling at airport checkpoints (60-37 according to one poll), but you can't get up there and rally around "Profiling is GOOD". In reality, we know who we're looking for! We aren't looking for the blonde-haired 40+ female from Iowa (yet)...we're looking for Middle Eastern men, approximately 18-40. When a different crime (say an AMBER ALERT) is committed, what do you always hear: "Police are looking for a white male, in his mid-30's, approximately 5' 7", slightly balding". Should they stop tall, black, females in their late teens? OF COURSE NOT.....THAT'S NOT WHO THEY'RE LOOKING FOR!!! They should stop me (that is my description)! Every day until they catch the real dude! I don't care if I am late for work, or the dentist, or whatever. I have nothing to hide...search away, until you find the kidnapped 4 year old. So, the bottom line is, when conservatives can rally around something without looking like a people-hating, war monger, then we need to. If I yell GO YANKEES in Fenway Park (I did....once), and a drunk Red Sox fan throws a beer at me (also true)...are they going to question the Yankee fan 5 rows behind me? OF COURSE NOT!!

Geno's, I hate your steaks, but I love your sign!!!! I am proud to wake up every day to defend your right to do that, and would hate to be waking up defending the rights of others who forced you to take it down, further expanding my committment to defend the right of people to be stupid.

I agree 2000% .....if immigrants want to come to our english speaking country then they should learn how to speak Enlgish PROPERLY BEFORE they come !
I left my country because of tooooooooo F-5&$^& much immigration !! Now thats so sad!!!

I guess he is correct to a degree. you might get people who can't speak a word and want something but can't make you understand and if you bring out the wrong order they may get upset. If they can point to the menue with pictures then I suppose they should be able to get what they want.

This is the reason why people hate Americans, we expect others to learn out language but when we go to other countries we don't bother to learn the language. I think what makes America great is its diversity, so why not speak a diverse number of languages.

I agree, i posted a question the other day about people only speaking spanish in big chain stores like gnc(the place that sells the vitamins and stuff) and in subway and stuff..thats dumb. It should be required to speak english because thats not fair and its annoying and rude. If I go to mexico id speak spanish to them..

and its not just spanish speakers that do this but theyre the main offenders....so SAD...really sad!

After working for immigration for several years I say that should be the nations moto. I wouldn't expect to go to Mexico speaking English thinking they would understand me. One of the main critria to become a US citizen through the naturalization process is to Be able to speak basic english unless you have a diagnosed disablity that prevents you from being able to do so. However you would be surprised by the amount of people that want to bring a translator with them. I mean how can you say that you truly swear allegiance to the States when you can barely say it and further more don't understand it.

Yes, I believe that English is a must for survival of immigrants in this country. But the sign lacks courtesy and can easily be found offensive and hostile.

Let's put it in this hypothetical situation:
You go to my country, India, and go to a restaurant. There you see a sign that says, "THIS IS INDIA: WHEN ORDERING "PLEASE SPEAK TAMIL"

If you don't get offended (which I think you will), won't you at least feel a little bit disrepected? Won't you feel slapped? Won't you feel turned down?

So, who's building the meltingpot bridge here? and who's breaking it down?

I HATE to be offensive and rude but I must point out that such behavior will forment hostility and create tensions. A free society must not have such "ridiculous" boundaries.

My country has a a thousand racial divisions, languages, and castes and YET we are a unique, solid democracy and we are here to stay and dominate. Why?

Pride and ego is dangerous, my friend. Stop, think carefully, isolate yourself from your core values, and think in a broad prespective; be open to others while still maintaining integrity. And then you will know what a TRUE democracy is.

A bar in Payette ,Idaho did the same thing. So far no "hits". Contrary to popular belief ENGLISH is a universal language. That is why so many countries learn it. Not only to communicate with us but to communicate with each other's respective countries. Spanish is the ONLY language demanded in the United States. This is how it's been for two generations. It is WRONG. The USA was once a melting pot but not anymore.
