Yes, I'm sure lots of people agree. After being in Canada for a week my ideas on this kind of mellowed out. A lot of the places and people spoke no English and some places didn't have their signs or anything in English...so I was pretty lost. Now that I'm home again I try to be more tolerant of the fact that there are a lot of people in the United States that do not speak English nor do they read English....a lot of those now live in the same city as me. I was visiting Canada...and I know we're talking about people who actually live in a place and don't speak their language. Pretty sad. But, I know I was not happy at work when I found out that we'd have to learn to speak a foreign language within 2 years. I think if people are going to "live" (not visit) here they should learn to speak the language.... not us try to learn all these languages for all these people coming here from everywhere! |

I agree, i live in tennesee, and alot of thngs in tennessee are in spanish, i was at krogers last night i asked one of the employees where something was at and she said no comprende, no habla english, now me knowing that mean i dont understand/comprehend i dont speak english, the thing is she wasnt any help to me or anyone else who needs help that dont speak spanish. its almost getting to the point of having to carry around pocket translators just to go shopping or read ads, or billboards, if you cant read or speak english learn, and if your learning good job.
to add something that others had commented on, if we must be come a country that learns other languages, than for us to learn spanish all mexicans should be required to learn english. or how about we make it the law that we learn every language in the world, to make everyone happy, why is it when any other race or immigrant who comes from here is willing to learn english but mexicans fight the idea of learning the laguage. when i lived in germany for 10 years i learned the language, to speak to the people, anyone who goes to a country a dn doesnt speak the language of that country needs to leave. |

Hey, you are exlactly right.
It is your tax money that is putting them thru school.
Keep up the good work. |

Yes. All previous immigrant groups immediately sought to speak English. They pledged themselves as Americans.
So many Mexican immigrants insist upon speaking Spanish and wave Mexican flags. They want to be both.
Look back to WWII when German and Italian immigrants went to Europe to fight, as Americans. They didn't wave Italian or German flags. They were Americans.
Look at all of the immigrants from China. They're able to learn English. They don't need bank ATMs in Chinese or voting materials in Chinese.
Thus, it appears, Spanish speakers are too stupid or lazy to learn English. What else can be concluded? |

Here's something to think about:
It's rude to put Spanish translations under everything: it suggests that while Germans, Russians, Africans, Chinese and anyone else you know can master English, Spanish speakers can't.
On the other hand...could it be true...? It MUST be, or there wouldn't be so much Spanish on everything. |

I agree. I mean first we have to do this for the spanish and then we will have to do it for everyone who speaks a different language in the US. When will it stop? |

Yes I agree but I haven't always. Its reached a ridiculous level. Not just Spanish. We need to have an official language for just that purpose all government required forms, road signs etc. would be in that language.
I was a little sensitive about the idea of an offical language. I grew up with my mothers stories of being beaten at school for speaking spanish. In rural New Mexico where she grew up Spanish was the language used in the home.
I don't care what language people what to use to talk among themselves but official written communication should be in English and that should be our official language. |

We used to think that the Canadians where so silly for having double up on everything by having to put it in French also now we are doing the same thing. |

Yeah-I'm sick of it. The only way this carp will end is if a law is passed making ENGLISH the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, then anybody who wants to ****** about it can f*** off, because English will be the language you must learn when you come here, because it's the official language here, so they either learn it, or dig them selves in a hole and stop biitching. |

I been living in America practically my whole life except for this one month which when I was out of the country. Anyways, I would say I enjoy learning Spanish, since most of my friends are Latino, plus I also enjoy learning other languages as well, just to have better communication with others, and such on. |

yes but i doubt that they spoke English when they arrived and they did have a support group (the immigrant community) the key here is to LEARN ENGLISH bring your culture and incorporate it into ours WE AIN'T GONNA WELCOME YOU otherwise and legal is the only way !!! |

Why is it always about you? Is it really a problem for you? As long as its in English somewhere, why is it a problem? Maybe you are just being intolerant. Sorry, I just call them as I see them. |

I am! They should be forced to learn English if they want to live here. They think we should cater to them. It makes me sick! |

I so agree with you. This is america, and we speak english. If i went to live in france, i would learn french, it's a common courtesy. It's like they expect us to change our lives completelly for them. |

I agree. If no one was made to learn english that moved to this country just imagine the amount of money it would take for all emergency services to have translators. How high would our taxes go to cover that? |

Nobody really cares about my ancestors. They spoke German and Nederlander and that was a really long time ago. They came, they worked and built things, they assimilated, it took many, many years. English, which is the master language of business and science is difficult to learn, but new immigrants are working hard to learn it. Give them some time, they are our allies. |
