I think they just want to drink. Like wit St. Patrick's Day |

First of all do some research. May 5th is NOT MEXICAN INDEPENDANCE DAY. I'm not mexican, have never been to Mexico and I know that May 5th is NOT MEXICAN INDEPENDANCE DAY. Its just a day made up in the USA as an excuse to get drunk. The actual Mexican independance day is Sept 15th. I think. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. May 5th is an important date in Mexican war history that came long after their independance. |

I don't celebrate it...so let me deport them! |

People probably just celebrate it so they can have an excuse to drink and party.
But it isn't hypocritical anyway because most people want to deport all illegal immigrants, not just illegal Mexicans. If Americans of Mexican heritage or legal immigrants from Mexico want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo but they are also against illegal immigration, is that hypocritical? |

Nope, go ahead and party with any Mexican-American or legal-resident Mexican friends. But, it's not Mexican independence day, it celebrates an important military victory that happend many years after Mexico declared independence from Spain (something Spain didn't even notice for 11 years after it happened). |

No it isn't their independence day. That is in September.
And no, it isn't hypocritical, since we have nothing against our Mexican (legal) friends or American friends of Mexican descent, and celebrate St. Patricks Day without thinking it represents the Irish illegally here.
A lot more people here have cultural reasons to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than those illegally here. |

If your an American citizen then you have the same interest as the rest of us to see that our laws are enforced and our borders are secure. Celebrating Mexican independence and freedom doesn't mean caring about your own country is suddenly hypocritical. I am happy that Mexico is free and I will celebrate it if invited but at the same time shouldn't Mexico's citizens try living in Mexico if they are proud of their country and thankful of their freedom? |

No, As long as they are legal, fine, no problem. It's just their day to have fun. I really have nothing against them. |

You did use the word ILLEGAL, which means they are here illegally...I'm not sure what your point is about deporting them.
Yea, shame on us for embracing something that the LEGAL Mexican-American's can celebrate...what the heck is your point???? |

It is not Mexican independence day it a war that Mexico won against the french. If I'm not mistaken.
Mexican Independence is September 16th.
But you have a point. I love Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick's day. It time to party. |

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16. May 5th commemorates victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla.
"The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5, 1862 near the city of Puebla, Mexico, during the French intervention in Mexico. It was a major Mexican victory, and is commemorated every year as Cinco de Mayo."
Is it hypocritical? Yes and no. It is interesting how at the end of all this political posturing by people from both sides of the immigration debate, people just want to party, enjoy life and have a good time. Life is too short. Let's stop being racist and party, drink and sleep with the "other."
"Hatred is the denial of desire." Stop denying your desire and have drink with a beautiful Mexican man or woman. yaaayy cinco de mayo yaaaayyy |

I don't think many American's celebrate it. I don't. |

Let 'em go back to Mexico and celebrate it. We celebrate Independence Day on July 4th in these parts. |

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence day... it's when the Mexicans defeated the French who were on a crusade fighting in everyone in the Americas. |

I realize it and don't celebrate it. I say round them up when they're taking over the parks and deprot them. Deflate the jumper things and drag them across the border...Mexicans love those things!! I couldn't care less about their independance. Aren't they dependant on us? Oh, and send the liberal illegal sympathizers with them. |

I drink on the anniversary of my divorce, not to celebrate, but to forget the rat I was married to. Maybe they are drinking to forget not to celebrate. Or maybe they are just drinking because they like to party |

I'm an American, I don't observe any other country's holidays. I don't think that Mexicans in Mexico even celebrate it. |

We were forced to accept this day in the name of "diversity".

No, its not their Independence Day... Cinco de Mayo celebrates a Mexican victory over the French, the battle was sometime in the 1860's. I don't remember exactly what year.
And no, I don't celebrate it.
Nor do I think that all Mexicans are illegal aliens, nor do I think all illegal aliens are Mexican. |

It is looked on as a day to get drunk..... I think for the most part it is insaulting to celebrat another countries national holiday in this country by any scale. |

I agree but cinco de mayo is when Mexico beat the French. But true thats ALL the americans ever do! |

Yeah, I know and even on "our" holidays they flock over here in droves and take up all the parks, and and scenic areas, and then leave their trash behind, and I see this "all the time",,they need to stay on their side for "their" holidays, you don't see any Americans going over there in flocks, yeah, maybe a few, but not in droves........ |

It's just an excused to party. One has nothing to do with the other. |

I think it's silly to celebrate it PERIOD! We aren't Mexico. If you want to go out and drink, just go out for the sake of drinking with friends. Why do you have celebrate another country's stupid holiday? |
|

How_Would_I_Know
 |
No. Why would it be? An independant Mexico is where all the criminal immigrants should be. Not seeing the problem there.
Now what I do find hypocritical is for criminal immigrants to celebrate it.. while they're here. |

They're right about Cinco De Mayo not being a holiday celebrated by Mexicans. It was oly celebrated in AMerica as a reason to drink. There are some in Mexico who celbrate it but only because we celebrated it first. And it' a good reason for them to drink. I think people protest on may 5th only because of the insult that immigrants protest on may 1st. If you don't realize, thats may day. It is celebrated by communist, Anarchist and the Black Panther as a prostest to overthrow our government. They often use acts of violence to get their point across. SOme of us here feel its a great insult for them to protest on a day with such meaning and some on the Anti illegal side wants to make a statement similar to the want the illegal side made. It may not be as bad as what the immigrants did by protesting on may day, but it's still wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. |

I don't celebrate it. Never will. Has nothing to do with America or any of my ethnic backgrounds and why would I dare go "celebrate" with people who have made it clear the only reason they tolerate my existance is for money? |

First of all, like many have mentioned, Cinco de Mayo is not mexican independence day, that is september 16. And unlike some people said, it is widely celebrated throughout mexico, especially in puebla, where the celebrations get bigger and bigger every year. Why is it such a big deal? Because on that day Mexico defeated one of the largest and most powerful military forces of that time. So before you go criticizing a holiday, learn the facts first ( that was not meant for you but for the answerers). |
