It is very British to criticise Britain, it always has been and always will be. There is also some small level of anti-Americanism here but it is not directed at American people, rather frustration with the White House and American foreign policy, but curiously, Democrat presidents always go down famously well here. |

You'd be surprised how many people despise America here in the UK. No offense to America, but I think you've answered your own question by saying it's mostly the young who speak of America as such an amazing place to live. |

People who love America (like me) and yet are stuck in this country feel very restricted over here. There is alot more freedom in America, and people have alot more choice. Living costs are lower and in relative proportion compared to over here. I know the US dosent have free healthcare but to be honest, I would rather pay for private healthcare over here as I do not trust the NHS.
I generally prefer American culture to British culture (if such a thing exists). I love big open spaces, I love the style of their houses compared to ours, I love American cars, I find the people to be much more friendly and cheerful, I love American food, and the choice of fast food restaurants they have over there, I love baseball, I could go on for ages but you get the idea.
Just because I think that way, dosent mean that everyone else does. Its my opinion. Im sure many people disagree with me and im sure I would disagree with what they have to say but that dosent mean I am wrong, or they are wrong. |

The British, especially the young, are down on Britain because it's a dying country. You've surrendered your sovereignty to the EU. Britain it's over you've lost your country SORRY. |

they would move back to the UK in a heartbeat if they moved to the US, long working hours, no health care or paid vacations, nothin but strip malls and mcdonalds and no walkable downtowns |

it all kinda depends on who you talk to ?
I think a lot of people are taken in by the hollywood dream !!!
you should not let it depress you , some people have strange ideas about a lot of things , and that will happen wherever you end up , the most important thing is to stay positive and happy , Cheers , good luck and be nice to people :) |

Your attitude is lived there done that, own a dozen of the d**n t-shirts. Think a moment; if it's the young folks there, they are wanting something different too. They know what it's like at home, and want to go somewhere they think is at least different than where they are. |

We are good friends with the UK as they are to us. I am happy that they feel the way they do about my country. |

My opinion is that you shouldn't worry about it. I've heard, seen, and read a million different opinions about the US-never been to the UK. Just live your life and be happy with what you have.
Sometimes I think people generalize too much. There is no reason to be depressed if your life in the UK is going well. I don't think your reason for wanting to move is a good reason to move somewhere else. |

nearly every thing young people listen to 'music wise', or watch on TV is from America....its only natural that they would be exited by America. i have to say that for sheer raw talent and professional excellence in entertainment. America has consistently dominated all western culture for a long long time. for me! (a much older guy) life with out Loise Armstrong. Sinatra. Ella. Buddy rich.....the marks brothers. John Wayne movies......BLOODY UNTHINKABLE!!!! be a bit proud of where you! came from my son. every country has its faults. but America has entertained us. and protected us for a lot of years. of course theres a bit of quiet hero worship. nothing wrong with that. personaly....i trust the American people to stand by us in times of trouble.... i do not trust the EU. |

the young are very impressionable and like the big colourful image or America
But when you get to my age you see it for what it really is; a large, self-obsessed, global warming, doughnut eating nation. |

It certainly isn't your imagination. There are plenty of anti Americans who like nothing better than to immerse themselves in American culture (from Levi's to Hollywood) and affect an American infection and syntax in their speech. And that is possibly why they are anti American; because they have been seduced and their love is unrequited. |

Wow, I dont know where you are chief, but where I live everyone hates/dislikes America and Americans are the butt of most jokes. It's apparently the same everywhere all my friends go to Uni, which includes several major cities (Nottingham, Newcastle, Liverpool, London, Hull, Manchester, Belfast).
Though I would say people like America the country more than they like the people in it. A lot of people have judged Americans disfavourably on the basis of electing Dubya-the-warmonger, as they see it, twice.
Also, I would agree most people are pretty down on what we have in the UK. Though to be fair we dont have much! |

They, like many people love the American culture! Take it as a compliment to your heritage and be happy of who you are and where you came from! |

The UK is following America, it has for years and will no doubt continue until we learn to associate ourselves with Europe rather then the US.
I lived in the US for a short while and was horrified that any nation can be so insular, sadly it's more dangerous for the world when America starts poking it's nose into the affairs of other countries.
I wouldn't ever return to the US it won't have improved and you seem to repeatedly elect bigger idiots to ruin your international image. Along with interning uncharged prisoners without eveidence that would stand up in a court of law I can see why non pro-American countries distrust you more and more. Sadly we get tarred with the same brush through association.
Where would you move? I love Europe but can't speak any language well enough to be able to live and work there so I'm stuck with English speaking countries I don't have the right qualifications to get me into NZ. If you make the effort to keep away from the governing machine in the UK life isn't so bad. In my experience the further from London you are the less crappy life is in the UK. |

You've got to separate the people from the government. Folks are pretty good in both countries.
And you have to separate movie fiction from reality or you'll believe there are incredible car accidents, the police always get their man, and, oh, yes, I love how people can walk barefoot in the snow or dive into ice cold water and swim for several minutes. Don't they know that stuff is f***ing cold? |

The was a big thing in the 80s about idolising american culture but in the present climate i find many english people are not particularly pro U.S. For a start the US dragged us through the s&&t and put us in a similar embarrising position that the US is in. |
