I am looking to study abroad, under the student visa, and after that, i plan to work there. I will be doing sound engineering and because it is a free-lance job, getting a work permit is not certain. I want to guarantee my chances of staying there and working on a long term basis. My own sister, is working in the United States, holding a green card, but is not a citizen. Is it possible for her to sponsor my green card? I'd be grateful to anyone who can help me out here as it means a lot to me! Can anyone provide details on the procedure and formalities that will have to be gone through to get this done?
P.S. I am 21 years old.

Sorry to burst your bubble but "freelance sound engineer" will not get you a work visa. You may get an OPT working for someone if you graduate from a US university BUT you would not be able to sponsor yourself as a "freelancer". You would need a company to sponsor you and getting one would be extremely difficult. There would have to be a shortage of sound engineers, you would have to be at the top of your field and the company would have to be willing to pay for the visa and the trouble to have you here!
A sister has to be a citizen in order to sponsor a brother and then depending on the country of origin expect to wait a minimum of 10 years.

A green card holder cannot petition a sibling. Once she is a citizen she can,but the process will take a minimum of 10 years until you can gain any type of legal status through her. |

Your sister is a legal permanent resident (green card holder). She cannot sponsor you in any way to get a green card. Your sister can only sponsor you when she becomes a US citizen, and you'll have to wait for 10 years. You can still apply for the F1 student visa and go to college in the United States. The other option is for you to enter the diversity visa (green card lottery) which is held every year. The last option is to marry a US citizen, who will petition for you to get a green card. |
