Is it possible to have citizenship in 4 countries?

i thought u were only allowed dual? someone i know said she has citizenship for 4 different countries 2 of which are canada & us?

Most people assume duel citizenship is as far as you can go because most people who have multiple citizenships only have one other but you can have as many as you want as long as the countries involved allow for it. By that I mean some countries like India do not allow you to hold more then one citizenship. My adopted daughter was born there and once we adopted her and brought her to Canada (which does allow for duel citizenship) she lost her Indian citizenship once she got Canadian citizenship. We may allow for more then one but India doesn't.

My nephew (actually my wife's nephew) was born in Canada but his father was American living in Canada with my sister in law. Because of all of that he is a duel US/Canadian citizen. He holds both passports AND he is in the process of obtaining Mexican citizenship after he married a very nice Mexican woman he met while working for a US firm in Mexico City. By the time he is done he will hold citizenship in all three NAFTA countries and can work unhindered in all of them. It makes him very marketable to employers (he's an engineer).

One of my daughters and I each have triple citizenship (Australian, USA and UK) and there is nothing to stop either of us from getting one or even more additional citizenships provided we meet the eligibility and residence requirements for additional countries and provided that all of the countries involved accept dual/multiple citizenships (and many do). For many countries, it only takes 5 or 6 years of residence including some time as a Permanent Resident which isn't particularly difficult to achieve if you have professional qualifications and a strong employment record.

Most countries allow dual citizenship, I've never heard of holding up to 4 nationalities at one time. The U.S. allows dual citizenship and so it is common to be a U.S. and Canadian citizen.

Many countries allow up to two as you are pledging allegiance to both nations and must uphold the laws of both countries and depending on the country, may have to complete mandatory military service or work for the government.

Yes, it is possible to hold 2 or more citizenships providing the laws of each country allow it.

Whether the US allows dual citizenship appears to be a grey area but the general consensus is they look the other way & since US citizens are obliged to enter & exit the US on an American passport whether or not you have other passports & what you do once you're outside the country is your own business.

Unless your friend also physically has 4 passports to prove this, she might just be assuming she's entitled to 4 citizenships - some countries don't allow dual citizenships & if you naturalise as a citizen in another country you automatically lose citizenship of your home country. Canada & the US wouldn't be a problem but the other 2 might.

No, only two.
Like for instance: Mexico and USA
